Technology for Disabled

Hello all,

I am new to the forums, but my wife (JohnnaMarie) is not. We
have been watching the Extreme Home Makeover show the past few
weeks and it has really stirred my heart.

You see, I am in Information Technology and have a expansive
knowledge of technology and its advances. We currently have
an awesome setup, because I am able to telecommute from home for
the company I work for.

I have always loved helping people as well, and my job, well, does
not really give me much opportunity to do so.

Here is where my query comes into play. I know there are many
people with disabilities that cannot afford technology that most
folks are able to enjoy. Furthermore, I have done some
basic research and have found sites that provide some
assistance to provide disabled folks with technology. I was
wondering if anyone has heard of any organizations that provide
technology assistance to folks with disabilities and financial
difficulties???

Also, I have found that technology that aides in improving life for
disabled persons tends to be pretty lofty in cost and I am sure
that there are folks who just simply cannot afford such things (For
example, the families that have been helped on the show).
Again, I would inquire if anyone knows of such organizations
that help provide this need???

Another thing I was curious about was CF specific (since I have a
bit of an interest level in this area with my wife). Do you
folks know people with CF who are financially pressed and cannot
afford technology? I ask this to see if there is a need
before I expend a ton more hours. Also, I do know of
organizations that take used computers and provide them to disabled
folks, but in my opinion, while this is good, again this is used,
and most likely antiquated technology. Also, I
would be interested in knowing what technology is available for
helping with quality of life enhancement and how affordable, etc...
????

Thanks for all your input, I appreciate it!
