Hi i'm a mom to Chelsie who's 5 w/cf she was diagnosed at 8 months i'm from the UK but have heard alot about the different dates they test you when you are pregnant to see if the baby has cf or just a carrier, i feel that when i get pregnant i would have this test done (not that i would change my daughter). hope someone can answer this.

I think it just depends on if you want to know, or complications with the pregnancy. I didn't get tested when I was pregnant. I thought the amnio too risky for a baby that I was going to have no matter what and so I had my son tested at about 5 months old just to be sure. I know they can see some evidence of CF on an ultasound also. Some people want to know, some would rather wait and see. I am a wait and see kinda girl.

I had the CVS test done when I was 10 weeks along with my daughter...the test is slightly more risky than amnio, but you find out about 4-6 weeks earlier. I didn't have any problems with the test. I am thankful that she does not have CF <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

We found out with this pregnancy that my husband and I both have the Delta F508 CF gene and after going to genetic counseling decided not to go forward with the amnio or CVS because we didn't want to risk a miscarriage. We are just going to Level 2 Ultrasounds more often and so far so good! We go Tuesday for our third ultrasound and I am 22 weeks pregnant. We will have our baby tested as soon as she is born to find out for sure.

We are meeting with our pediatrician tomorrow about our 3 year old - I am going to insist that they send us to the CF Clinic to have a sweat test, although I would really like to do a blood test to know if she is a carrier. She doesn't show any signs of CF at this point.

Best of luck to you on a happy and healthy pregnancy.

ok thanks for the replies, i think it is fantastic that some parents will carry on with the pregnancy without being tested, i think you have great courage and determination.
And princess1 i hope your daughter is free from cf and how did you find out then that you and your husband had the Delta F508.

Doctors should be offering the CF carrier test prior to pregnancy so you are informed of all your options. This is suppose to be the standard of care but may are not doing this. I was not tested until I was 8 weeks pregnant. Good luck.

My daughter was tested when she was about 20 weeks. It was told to her that it was a routine test. She is a carrier and so is her husband. Amnio was done and Ashton tested positive. This was devistating news to the whole family, but there is also good in knowing early. We all have been educating ourselves and preparing for our little angel. Ultra sounds also show a bowel obstruction which is very common with this disease. The pulmonologist is already preparing to start the baby on the drugs needed to protect his lungs. That means he will have a head start on fighting this disease instead of not being diagnosed until a few months to a year old.

Good luck to you and your little angel! Our thoughts and prayers to you.

I am curious if anyone waits to have the testing done until after birth and so that you can get things like life insurance in place for the little just on the -in case- something is wrong side? Not to cash in right away, don't get me wrong here. Just so that the little one can have a policy in place for the future on the in case they are uninsurable at a later time. Does that make sense?
