I live in Hawaii and the beach is all around me. Infact I feel better around the ocean, all the fresh air especially here the hummidity of the ocean. I have been doing lots better since i moved here. I was going in the hosp. every 3wks and now it is about every three months... My fev1 is like 40% which is good for me, i was usually around the low thirties. Quinsidece????!!! I don't know but my docs say nothing about being around the ocean.

I always vacation at the Beach (mexico, jamaica etc) and always feel good laying by the beach. Granted the last two times i went on vacation i had to come back and go in the hospital but it had nothing to do with the beach. I should have had a tune up before i went but didn't want to go on vacation with iv's!!!!

Ahhh Caren I've delayed IVs more than once so that I could go to a beach vacation without them. You can't swim!! What's the point of a beach vacation if you can't swim!! AHHH!! Plus a vacation is just that. VACATION. IVs are not something that is included in the word vacation.

I haven't been told to limit or stay away from the beach, but to limit my time in the sun because I burn so easy (w/ or w/o sunscreen) due to sun-sensitive medicines, plus I have fair skin (I am sooo pale). But I can go to the beach. The biggest problem I have with the beach is humidity in the summer (since I live in North Carolina, we have extremely muggy humidity) which can cause breathing to become difficult for me at times.

Does any one else have a big problem with humidity?

I have a HUGE problem with humidity and my pfts's are in the low 70% , so can not imagine if they were lower. That is why we are moving to AZ. Dry climate makes me feel better and I love warm weather!

I LOVE the beach. The salt air does something for me. I think there have done some studies showing salt air to be benficial to CFers or at the very least, to those with lung problems. The bach just seems to make me clear out.

I havent been told to stay away but it seems when i am around the beach (only around cold weather time) that i get sick for a couple days. I think it is this combination of cold and salt air that causes me to cough more.

I love the beach. I feel great while I'm there, all the salt and the breeze... I life in Arkansas, so it is really really humid here. It's miserable. I love the beach, because it is less humid and less muggy.

S,
Yes I go to the outer banks (OBX), maybe once a year, in early June or Oct or late May or Sept when it's not so hot (or cost so much ). When I do go to the OBX I go out after 3 or 4 pm until sunset (bring bug spray if you want to stay out after dark) when it has cooled off some and usually do a treatment before going out. I have lived in NC my whole life, so I am as use to the humidity (as much possible) or at least know how to work with/around it.

Where in NC do you live? We live in Durham and we love the Outer Banks. In fact, I'm in the process of organizing a trip for the summer. I'm curious to see how my daughter handles it.

Amy,
I live in Williamston (about 30-45 minutes from Greenville (ECU) or 2-3 hrs from Durham). I'm sure your daughter will handle it fine, specially at her age. She will love the beach. I only started having problems within the last year or so but I still can handle it, just have to be careful and know my limits and not over do it. Just make sure she wears sunscreen, specially if she is on a sun-sensitive medicine (like Cipro) or has really fair skin, cause she can easily get sunburned, which makes CPT or the Vest unpleasant to do. I learned the hard way with that.

Hey Blindhearted..........I actually lived in Greenville for several years and went and graduated from ECU. Go Pirates! I know exactly where Williamston is. Thanks for writing me back. I'm sure my daughter will love the beach and I'm planning on taking lots of sunscreen. She's not on Cipro but she is very fair.

Take care, Amy

I have lived by the ocean (and in the ocean) in the tropics and in a temperate region, and my physicain tells me to swim swim swim if I get a lung infection and I am really healthy - then again, our ocean is really clean in Australia.
