I need everyone help on this. I am taking a psychology class, and as a requirement of the class I have to do a research project. I am required to ask a question about a subject that is important to me and then with my research answer that question. My question is this: What is the relationship of Cystic Fibrosis and Depression? So I am asking all of you CFers to help me out on this. Below I have a list of questions that I have for all of you. If you do not feel comfortable about replying to them on here please e-mail them to me at JackieALynds@gmail.com. I appreciate every and all answers that I receive. Also I would like to add that no ones name will be used in my final report.

1. What is your age?

2. Are you a Male of Female?

3. Where do you live?

4. At what age were you diagnosed with CF?

5. How would you classify your CF, Severe, Moderate, or Fair or does not affect you in any way, and please explain.

6. Are you depressed or have you ever been depressed, if so what aged did this start?

7. If you said yes to the above question, do you feel that this relates to your CF, if so how?

8. If you said yes to question 6, but no to questions 7, please explain.

9. How severe have you been Depressed, Severe, Moderate, or Fair, and please explain?

10. Do you feel that there are sufficient resources for your Depression and CF?

11. Do you feel that your Depression has had a negative impact on your CF?

12. Do you feel that any of the medication that you are or have taken has caused or impacted your Depression in a negative way?

13. Do you feel that your Depression fluctuates as your health fluctuates?

14. Does any one else in you family suffer from Depression?

15. Has something else, besides CF, such as a traumatic event, or an environmental factor influences you your Depression, if so what and to what extent?

Please add further detail if you like, and like I mentioned before, you will remain anonymous in my final report. I thank all of you in advance, and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.

1. What is your age? I'm 23.

2. Are you a Male of Female? Female.

3. Where do you live? Connecticut.

4. At what age were you diagnosed with CF? Two days old.

5. How would you classify your CF, Severe, Moderate, or Fair or does not affect you in any way, and please explain. It's fair. I'm in pretty good health (90% PFTs) but I do a LOT of upkeep.

6. Are you depressed or have you ever been depressed, if so what aged did this start? It started when I was roughly 14 years old.

7. If you said yes to the above question, do you feel that this relates to your CF, if so how? Sort of. It originally came about because of typical teenage stuff - boys, etc. (I just took it to heart more than was healthy). However, I had more problems as a teenager than I otherwise would have, if not for the CF. For instance, when I was 17 years old, I had a little bit of a meltdown and told the guy I was with we needed to at least get engaged. I knew I wasn't dying tomorrow, but it seemed so important. He left me because of it. So it's really a mixture of CF stuff and regular stuff.

8. If you said yes to question 5, but no to questions 6, please explain.

9. How severe have you been Depressed, Severe, Moderate, or Fair, and please explain? How severely have I ever been depressed? I'd say pretty severe. I tried to kill myself once when I was 17. And I cut myself from the time I was 15 until I was almost 21. Now it's moderate enough to need to be treated, but I'm in much better condition.

10. Do you feel that there are sufficient resources for your Depression and CF? Almost every single time I go into my clinic, my social worker stops in to see how I'm doing. She's very pleasant and seems to really care. The main problem I have with depression + CF is that most "regular" therapists are useless in that aspect. If I talk about how CF has me anxious or whatever, I get "Well you're still young, you have a long ways to go, you never know what medical advances will appear" blah blah blah. All of this may or may not be true, but if it's bothering me, it doesn't help me to just say "stop worrying about that - you're being negative and unreasonable." Especially when I see worrying about CF as completely reasonable. So basically, most "regular" therapists aren't trained or skilled in treating chronically ill people.

11. Do you feel that your Depression has had a negative impact on your CF?
I guess it did a little bit when I was in high school. Course that may be depression or typical teenage garbage. I stopped doing my meds and stuff around the time I was 16 or 17. I didn't care, I didn't want to be bothered. Overall, though, it doesn't really affect my CF. While overdosing and cutting myself isn't healthy, it didn't directly impact anything CF-related.

12. Do you feel that any of the medication that you are or have taken has caused or impacted your Depression in a negative way? I don't think so, no.

13. Do you feel that your Depression fluctuates as your health fluctuates? It can. If my health goes down, it tends to bum me out a little bit more. Like right now I'm on IVs and I'm more easily depressed when I'm on IVs. I think it's just overall feeling "blah" that does it.

14. Does any one else in you family suffer from Depression? Yes. Several extended family members, and my sister and my mom.

15. Has something else, besides CF, such as a traumatic event, or an environmental factor influences you your Depression, if so what and to what extent? Nothing more than what I mentioned in number 7. I'm trying to think. Oh I know. My dad was dx with Parkinson's disease a few years ago and then Parkinson's-related dementia. It's gotten to where he doesn't make sense, he can't write messages, he can't use the phone properly, etc. So he's pretty far down on the dementia scale. Whenever I think about that whole situation I'm either: annoyed, or depressed. While it's not his fault he has Parkinson's and dementia, he sped up his dementia A LOT by drinking like a fish the past few years. So it's not his fault that he has the disease to begin with, but it is his fault that he got this dumb this fast. He didn't do any of the things he was supposed to to take care of himself. And whenever I think about that, it pisses me off, because I've been doing that since I was frickin 10 years old.
I think I rambled there. Anyways. Other than my dad's dx, and the normal stuff here and there, nothing else really adds to my depression that I can think of.
