The Vest and Hotel Stays

Hi Liza,

I don't do the vest because traditional chest PT is still offered in Massachusetts. However, my husband and I ALWAYS end up doing my PT in hotels when we have to travel and it's always an anxiety-ridden issue for me.

We try to book a corner room, away from elevators and ice machines, and on a high floor because they tend to be quieter and have less foot traffic. We've had to do chest PT early in the morning or before dinner when I know everyone must be relaxing in their rooms. I try to focus on other things and not worry what other people are thinking, but I do remain paranoid about getting phone calls or knocks on the door. My husband could give a crap, but hey, that's me. Still, I know that I don't have a choice so I suck it up. We turn the TV on pretty high to help drown out the noise. Only once did a manager call with the people (a bunch of hung over college kids) complaining from next door and wondering what the sound was. My husband explained it was a medical treatment and told the manager it was not optional. The manager was very understanding and basically apologized for bothering us. The whole thing stinks, but it has to be done. Your child's comfort and well-being must override other peoples' frustration/curiousity.

Hi, Liza...

We've stayed at TONS of hotels and only once was it a problem (though I angst about it nearly every time)... What happened was I was sitting on the bed doing the vest and we even had our TV way down (I don't turn it up to hear it when doing the vest cause I figure THAT they'd deffinitely hear)... Well, about 10 mins. into the treatment my "neighbor" starts pounding on our wall. So, I take it they thought I was too loud. It was about 11:00 pm and that is when I usually do my nighttime treatments. So, I just moved from the bed to a chair on the other side of the room. They didn't pound again, but DH and I were shocked that it happened. I wonder what the people in the other room THOUGHT the sound was! LOL... Its clearly not talking from a TV or a blow dryer, so I'd be interested to see what people who do hear it think we're doing!

Anyway, the weird thing is my coughing would probably bother them more, and later at night I lay in bed coughing, but no pounds came. LOL... I do think some hotels have extremely "thin" walls. We usually try to get a groud floor (so the machine isn't shaking directly above someone) and if I can, I try to do the treatments away from a wall that I know connects to another room. Those are a couple things I have done. Mostly, we've had no problems, but I deff. understand your concern. Just one more thing we have to think about that the general public does not when they travel.

I wouldn't worry about it either. I also have the Hill-Rom 104 and it's actually pretty quiet - compared to what it could sound like. I remember a much older vest I used to have that was very loud, and this new 104 model just purrs. I always set the vest on my bed as well as the nebulizer and it's fine. No one has ever complained. I doubt it's any louder then a hairdryer. Don't worry.

Ha! I didn't even think about disturbing other guests when we did the vest in hotel rooms over spring break. I was more fascinated by the fact that we took the vest, compressor, etc. with us and did them (it was our first time away from home since dx) like it was no big deal.

We have a big Hill Rom 103 and no case for it. The staff that load your luggage on to the cart to transport it to your room (I would call them bellhops but there is probably a more "pc" name for them now) just handled it like is was one more suitcase. No questions. I had to really restrain myself from voluntarily explaining what it was.......

I've had loud sex in hotel rooms, and caused no problems. If no one cares about that, they aren't likely to care about your vest and compressor. Besides which, it's a health thing, it's not like you're choosing to be loud. If they don't like it, they can suck a plastic bag.
