The Vest in Adults

One nice thing about the vest is that you can always do it, even when you aren't up to actual excercise. It was easier for me to get into the routine of doing my vest than to excercise, lol, even though I do swim at the local community college 3 days a week.

I figure that it all probably does something a little bit different (excercise, vest, Flutter/Accapella/Quake), so it can't hurt to do everything I can to get a little bit of each incorporated into my routine . I have had this vest (the 104) for just over 2 years now, and I like it just fine, but you may want to check out Amy's (Sakasuka) blog about Warwick and the vests before you make up your mind, and ask a few questions (like the hoses pop off my 104 a lot, and I have to manually change the settings, whereas other brands don't have hoses that pop off, are programmable, and have custom made vests, things like that . I got a Hill Rom Vest because that was all I knew was out there, so I don't know what I would have done otherwise .

Oh, sorry, I forgot the first part of your question! My insurance covered mine. If I remember right, it was about $16,000, which my insurance paid off as, basically, rent to own, over the course of a year. Hill Rom also has a program that you can apply for to have your co-pays (if any) reduced or eliminated, which was a life saver! Also, during the rent to own period, my insurance called to check the hours on my machine (to make sure I was using it like I was supposed to) and to make sure that I was happy with it.

Oh, and when my PFT's were in the high 70's/low 80's, I really couldn't tell much of a difference if I missed. But now that I have been anywhere from FEV1 of 37 to 56, I can tell if I miss more than one vest treatment (and no other airway clearance) in a row. If I am just going somewhere overnight, I just take one of my small devices. If I am going to be gone longer than that, I take my vest to make sure I am at my best during my trip.

I also wanted to add that I do my Pulmozyme and 3% with the vest and it really helps to loosen the junk.

As far as being regimented...I do mine twice a day unless for some reason I have to miss a session. This happens on the weekends sometimes. Also when I go away on vacations I don't take my vest with me because it is huge and way too heavy to be carrying all around. I have the older version so the newer ones are much easier to transport. I need to look into getting one soon. I always have my accapella though when I go away and if I feel I am getting junky when I am gone then there is always manual CPT.

I've had my vest for 6 years or so and I'm a big fan. I use it for 20 minutes twice a day. I have mine sitting next to my computer, so in the morning I read cnn.com and various online comics, and in the evening I usually read this site or hop into the chat room. I rarely miss a treatment. I almost always take it with me when I travel, although I do have the older, larger vest. I probably should upgrade to a newer model soon. My insurance did cover mine.
