The Vest - what age did your child get it?

Our dr keeps saying around age 3. My wife asks at every visit and they finally measured her up and said she's still too small.

Debbie, sorry to here Cheyenne is so ill. It seems odd that they cannot get rid of the pneumonia. Good Luck Wed. And I agree about the common sense comment.

Best Regards,

Kaylee got her vest after her x-rays showed that she had significant lung deterioration from the last time she had x-rays--one year ago. She had been considered to small before that. I'm so glad she does it now. The daycare dids sit around and listen to her talk 'cause she sounds so funny!

May I ask where Cheyenne is seen? Maybe you need to get a second opinion on her care. I'm sure you know that damage to the lungs is irreparable. If you haven't made this point to her you should, she's not too young to understand. My parents made the point from an early enough age that I don't remember learning about it. It's interesting when you learn of something at a young age you don't really get everything mommy/daddy is saying but in time it all sticks and is less of a surprise than dropping the bomb on a teenager say.

Here's how my parents explained it. Irreparable damage means her healthy lungs won't be healthy for as long and when there's a cure it will only stop the disease in it's track, not fix the lungs of damage in the past. Sit her down like she's 16 and tell her now that she's a grown up now that she's six it's time she take some responsiblity and understand the battle you are all involved with here. You've got to work together. I've really enjoyed some of your posts and this is the reason why I took the time to write this message to you and share my experience. Having crumby lungs 3 out of 4 weeks isn't acceptable - put your foot down - before it drives you nuts!!!

If you don't like this advice maybe someone else will find it beneficial.

Also, Terri I wouldn't suggest Kaylee regularly talk during vest. I believe talking during vesting does damage to my vocal cords. I've experienced hoarseness after talking with relatives during a vacation when I wasn't sick and also when I was sick.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I do appreciate it. It could be that my daughter is too small . . . I will definitely be asking about it at our next appointment in November.

Debbie - I hope Cheyenne has a good visit on Wednesday and that her docs can prescribe something to keep pneumonia at bay . . .that has to be very hard to deal with.

ktsmom - just diagnosed and already have the vest? Wow, that is great and kudos to your doc/clinic for getting it already!!

And thanks to Nicole, Tammy, Carrie, norcotrent, Terri and Lauren for your replies as well . . . I learn so much from these boards . . . something new every day!

i would be vary cautious about your clinic telling you that your kid is too young or too small for the Vest. more often than not, clinics have outdated information.

I would call the Vest companies and give them your kid's measurements. They can tell you definitively if your kid is too small or not!

1. The twins were 14 months - and have done GREAT with it.
2. I told them that we wanted the vest and asked for a prescription. They were trying to get us to come on board with a study that took a lot more time per day and I said we just couldn't manage it if we didn't have a vest... I mapped out the day for them... two hours of manual PT, plus 2 hours of nebs... wasn't going to work for us, without a Vest
3. I think the PTs are making the Vest decisions and they were wishy-washy about it, but the clinic itself was on board.... they never had a child that young with the Vest, but I think that they were more open since we have tinws.
4. They were not having respiratory issues.

I would just ask for it.... Also I doubt that she's too small. Maren only weighed about 17lb when she got it... just about 18 inches chest circumfrence.

Good luck -- the Vest has been great for us.
