They just don't listen...

About two weeks ago now my hemotosis (sp) got worse from two days of dry cough and lung irritation and when i woke up there was about 3 tbl spoons of blood that i coughed up, i knew it wasn't serious enough to go to the hospital and i knew i had an infection so i called the clinic to let them know, i am going ot the clinic on march 21st. The nurse i was talking to was like i'll talk to the doctor and call you back, they discussed it over and decided that two weeks of cipro/zithromax would be best. Well i told them that the anitibiotic pills don't seem to work on me, they have never helped my lung infections before and i want something else.. she said she'd call me back.. so.. she talked to the doctor again and called back and they decided that i should just go and get them anyways... which pissed me off but whatever i had an appointment soon anyway i'll yell at them later. Basically i went to pick up the antibiotics and found out they wouldn't take my boyfriends perscription card and i had to use my plan first which was a re embursment (sp) plan so i had to pay $235 up front and then i send in the receipts and whenver the insurance company gets around to it they'll give me 80% back. which really pissed me off because i didn't have any money to begin with.. but that's beside the point, the point is two weeks later and the infection isn't gone (the bleeding is because i was smart and just took cough syrup to keep me from coughing that day and that night and that cleared up really nicely) it just pisses me off because i know how my body works.. and they can easily go through my chart and see that it's never done anything... i work so much better with inhailed antibiotics and i don't want iv because i don't feel like it's at that point, if they'd just listen and give me something inhailed i'd be doing so much better.. does anyone else think that the pill antibiotics don't work as well as the doctors would like to believe they do?

Yes. They want to try everything else before they go to inhaled or IVs so you don't grow resistant to stuff sooner than necessary... but oral meds don't do jack for me anymore.

I think it is imporant to talk to you doctor about this issue. It is important to work as a team with your doctor.

BTW, you probably know this by now, but just in case make sure you don't take the Cipro with calcium or it won't work.

Cheers!! Hope you feel better.

Ashley - I completly understand where you are coming from. I've had an infection for the past 1.5 months that just won't clear up. I even asked the doc to test me for aspergillus - because I am culturing it, and figured that my infection that is lingering may be due to a reaction from the aspergillus, and they keep informing me that they know my body better then I. When I was first sick I asked to be put on inhaled Tobra because I know that works best for my body - but they said no - they put me oral Cipro for two weeks, and then when it didn't work, they put me on another week of Cipro, and then finally decided to put me on two weeks of inhaled Tobra - FINALLY. I say don't take no for an answer. You know your body better then a doctor, you've lived with it for 21 years. Like others have told me - you are the customer, and they are the service provider. If anything - are you able to go to another CF clinic? - get another CF doctor?

You think they might belong to:

Maybe that's why they don't listen.

I definitely think this with some meds. I was always put on Cipro when I was in my teens, and the bacteria I grow/grew ended up becoming resistant to it. I had to take a yr or so break from taking it at all, and now I take it so irregularly it usually works - for me though I usually show improvement within 24 hours if the meds are going to do the job. If not I see no change.
I do hope that yiur docs start listening to you when you tell them what you need. A friend of mine has the same problem with the oral antibiotics. She just doesn't take them cause they never seem to work for her.
