HI I'm 23 and fairly good with my cf. I'm not in the hospital but maybe once a year. But now I cough so hard in the mornings that I pee down my leg and I cough for about 30 to an hour and my Doc's tell me not to take cough meds, but I'm to the point that I will try anything to not cough so hard and so long. My 2 yr daughter even comes up to me and asks me if I'm ok. Does anyone know what i could do? My Doc's are no help.

Hi Gabby, Do you do anything like chest pt? Maybe your having trouble with coughing because you cant get whatever it is out. I use the Flutter and it helps me alot. Also I use a cool mist humidifier maybe your too dry. That could be the cause too. I used to cough my head off. But havent in a while because the humidifier I use at night keeps me much more moist so I can cough whatever in the morning. I don't know if it will help or not but that's my 2 cents. Sometimes I have to run to the potty after a real heavy cough too. It will get better. <img src="i/expressions/sun.gif" border="0">

I've struggled with that before. Especially night time was hard for me. It seemed as soon as I got anywhere near horizontal - here it came! Sometimes I coughed so hard I would choke and gag and still would not have gotten any relief. A few things have helped me. 1) Adding pulmozyme to one treatment a day consistently.2) Getting some concerted exercise. I'm a mom of a 2 year old also and I thought that life in general was enough to consider exercise, but I have found that actual concerted focussed exertion is what I need. You can be creative. I've made up some games that involve my daughter, so it's exercise for her too (bu she thinks it is play) and it helps me get what I need without a gym and babysitter fees.3) I take one Mucinex (guaifenesin) tablet twice a day. It's 12 hour effective and I take the regular one (not DM) so it ONLY has the expectorant in it. It helps my cough to be more productive with less work, so I end up coughing less often and for a shorter amount of time. Let us know what you end up trying and if it helps you.

BTW, welcome! I see you're a new member. Congradulations on being a mama! This may sound mercenary, but would you email me and tell me about your pregnancy and birth or adoption. That's one of the things I do for the community. I run a website (<A href="http://www.geocities.com/MurrensNatureMama">www.geocities.com/MurrensNatureMama</A>) about parenthood for adults with CF. I am always intersted in other people's stories of becoming parents. We learn a lot from one another. You can email from here at <A href="mailto:jaloughlin3@sbcglobal.net">jaloughlin3@sbcglobal.net</A> or from my website mainpage.
