This may possibly sound quite stupid

But i'd rather be stupid than ignorant

My boyfriend (w/CF) is currently on some sort of medication that makes his weight increase and makes him eat absolute HEAPS! Im afraid I dont know what it's called or anything, but I'll try best I can to explain it what I do know about it (I am afraid my knowledge about it is quite scarce, but that's why I want to learn about it and I thought perhaps someone on here may know what the heck im on about! )

He calls them his "fat pills" or "hungry pills", and as I mentioned already, they give him serious permanent munchies... he described it as a ravenous feeling that never ever goes away... and when he first was taking them early last year, he said it was the first time in his life he had really felt hunger.
He also managed to double his weight (he went from 7 to 14 stone) in a very short space of time.
He stopped taking them, and has started taking them again recently as the weight fell off quite quickly...

I realise this must sound quite ignorant and silly, but I just hope there is somebody else here who knows what Im describing... I would just like to know more about them, and what other effects they can have on people?

I may be wrong in saying this... but if Im not, it may help clarfiy what they are... but I think they may also have something to do with women's hormones?

I just really would like to know more about this..

Thank you (and sorry about the vagueness and pants descriptions!) xxxx

At first I thought you were talking about prednisone (a steroid) which can greatly increase your appetite. But you didn't mention him being particularly sick, and I don't think a doctor would put someone on that just to make them eat. After a while of searching I found this:

"Megace (megestrol acetate), a female sex hormone, was prescribed in the past for appetite stimulation but it has several serious drawbacks. First, it can suppress testosterone production, which is clearly an unwanted side effect because testosterone deficiency can actually contribute to appetite loss. Megace can also sometimes cause breast enlargement in males. Further, the use of Megace has recently been tied to avascular necrosis, the death of bone tissue (see "Bone Death and Destruction")."

Now that you know the name I'm sure you can look up whatever you need. Personally I have never taken it or heard of it. Good luck! (and keep in mind that a lot of times some side effects listed are rare, so don't get too worried about what you read - just watch out for bad side effects - I'm sure he does already)

Edit: If you are close to him, don't be shy about asking specifics about his condition, it really means a lot to have someone care that much about them, and try to get involved with their care.

There are no stupid questions, how does one learn without asking questions.

I was on Megace once but mine was in liquid form, don't know whether or not it also comes in a pill form. I didn't know the side effects that SevenStars mentioned, but I do know that if you are a diabetic, it can make your blood sugars go through the roof. This was my experience and why I stopped Megace, even though it worked well.

There is also Marinol, another appetite stimulant. This is a pill. This one didn't work as well for me. It's a small round ball, brownish red in color.

I'm also wondering if your boyfriend's pills are digestive enzymes, and perhaps is embarrassed about them and calls them his fat pills etc? As a kid once, and I don't know why I did it, I told my friend they were vitamins. I guess I didn't want to explain everything.

Does he take them with every meal? Does he take them once a day? Is it one pill or more than one? Did he have more bathroom problems when he wasn't taking these pills?

I'd hope that if you were to ask him and tell him you are interested in knowing everything about him, including his health, medicines and treatments, he would gladly share. It's great that you want to know and understand.

By the way, Welcome to the site. Feel free to ask any questions. We are a great community and love to help. You might also want to repost the question in the main Adults section - it's viewed more I think.

Best Wishes
