This might be a really stupid question... but I had to ask

My understanding of pancreas transplants is that it is for people whose pancrease have become toxic to the rest of the body or just have completely stump functioning.

I would think as long as a CFer can manage with meds that we wouldnt be considered for a tx.

I also believe tho depending on the patient that if you were eligible for say a liver tx & your pancrease was almost caput that you might be considered for both the liver & pancrease tx.

That would make sense if you were getting a new liver, since it's in a similar part of the body and you would be exposed to the risks of the immunosuppressant drugs anyway. The multi organ involvement of this disease is so complex. I have a long way to go in understanding it.

That's kinda what's happening with a friend of my boyfriend. He's severely diabetic since his teens and his kidneys are failing and he's on dialysis, he's going to be listed for that and they have now said that while they're in there they are looking to replace his pancreas at the same time. Although I really haven't heard of many CF patients having it done. But you never know there's bound to be someone out there that has <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I DID read about a man in the TX area who had a double lung and pancreas tx....the first at that center and maybe in the state. I will see if I can find the article. I am not sure why they felt he was a good candidate as far as the risk vs benefit. May have been a severe CFRD and PI problem.
