I am curious those of you who live outside the U.S. and have socialized medicine. Is your CF are good? Are there CF Centers or doctors who treat CF regularly? Are your meds FREE or low cost?

If someone can expand in detail that would be great! You can PM me too.

Hubby and I are moving and after watching Michael Moore's SICKO, I am real curious about CF care under socialized healthcare.

Thanks!!!!!

I'm no help, I live in the US. But I just wanted to add this for information's sake. We don't necessarily need SOCIALIZED medicine. From Sicko, I believe... Canada (maybe?) doesn't have socialized medicine. Socialized medicine = the government owns and controls the hospitals. All we need is a single-payer system. Government doesn't own or control hospitals, but pays for health insurance. Much like public schools. Government doesn't own or control them, but public education is free.

Just thought I'd add that because a lot of people mix up the terms and that's a big reason why the people against universal health care in the US are against it.

I don't have any idea though, I've lived in Connecticut my whole life. Heh.

Canada DOES have socialized medicine, and i love it. You will never, never get turned away for any medical related issue.

Basically, for cf, they have a list of a bunch of meds that you can get for free, no questions asked. This includes tobra, enzymes, diabetic stuff, antibiotics etc. If for some reason you need some med that isn't on this list ie pulmozyme, tobi, you can either use insurance from work, school, or go on the government insurance, which is really good. You pay based on what you make, and their list is pretty extensive.

The one thing that can be critisized is the wait for certain surgeries, that aren't considered life threatening. Hip replacements, that kinda stuff, you can expect to wait for a while. It is getting better though. As we pay off our debt, we are freeing more and more money we can use for our health care and stuff.

Where I am we have socialized medicine (I think!) and medically it works very well. I've never paid for a tablet in my life. All through my pre -tx days if Iwanted to see my consultant I rang them up and called over that day or just walked into clinic. I could get seen that day, that morning. Same with GP service, just drop in.

I don't think financially I would survive if I had to pay for all my medications, especially the HIGH-TEC ones (prograf, cellcept).

The only problem with here is that our hospitals absolutely are terrible, physically. For pwcf, they are dangerous as there's no segregation. I'm not sure how much that has to do with socialized medicine though.

I know in our private hospitals (if you have health insurance which I do anyways) they are lovely and very plush.

For those Americans who are against the idea, what is it that you don't like??
