Briceton's liver is enlarged and fatty! His liver enzymes have been high since birth but the enzyme level came back fine this past test. Just worries me about the enlargement.</end quote>

My doctor told me a few years ago that mine was enlarged. She did say that its very common in CF & doesnt necessarily mean its anything to worry about.

Just keep an eye on it!

I have mild liver disease with my CF. It is just at the level now where I don't have to take anything for it. My liver enzymes are slightly elevated is what the doc say.

My husband has liver problems and has been a lot of the focus of his CF treatment. He takes Actigal (also called ursidol) and is followed by a liver doc as well. My husband has a really enlarged spleen that is caused by the liver disease and has problems with his clotting factors (because he spleen "eats up" his platelets). This has been a concern especially when he has hemoptysis.

Another issue that can come with the liver disease is portal hypertension. This can cause esphogial bleeding. Apparently different clinics have different philosophies when it comes to treating this. When they discovered that my husband's spleen was so enlarged about 15 years ago they started working him up for a transplant. He refused to have one. Now fast forward 15 years (he is 30) and the liver team isn't even considering working him up for a transplant yet. The doc here explained that they don't talk about transplant until the liver functions are compromised where some other clinics want to transplant as soon as portal hypertension is diagnosised.

I am sure that the clinic will want to have their liver folks follow your son and they can just keep an eye on things. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

I also have cf liver disease (fatty liver), and I am being treated with Ursidoil too. I go to a GI doctor (he is pediatric, but has agreed to take on us adults, since we don't have a GI doctor at adult clinic, and he is now in private practice ). I have an appointment tomorrow, as a matter of fact.

I go in about every 3 months or so (but won't be going in during flu season, according to my GI doctor- he tries to keep his cfers out of the office and the hospital as much as possible during the cold and flu season ).

Last regular clinic visit, my levels were up again (????) but I am hoping they turn out to be back to where they should be when I go in tomorrow. Mine are usually only slightly elevated too. I have read that liver disease in cf patients rarely shows up in blood work, Johnna. If you haven't had more extensive testing than the blood work, I would insist on it. You need to know, and you should (of course, just MHO, based on what I've read ) probably be on something like Ursidoil, too. I don't mean to scare you, but please talk to your doctors.
