Those with major lower back pain (and no relief)

Have you been to a doc about your back problems? I am asking because do you KNOW that your back problems are caused by your sleeping and the mattress you are using?

I had pretty severe lower back problems in middle school and high school. I still had some mild pain into my 20s and now. I went to the doc about it in high school because I couldn't even bend over without crying in pain. My lower back pain ended up being related too tight hamstrings and my breathing.

The doc said that my hamstrings were tight - and thus were pulling DOWN on my lower back muscles. While at the same time my upper back muscles were pretty much always contracting since I breathe more rapidly and cough more often due to CF - so they were pulling UP on my lower back muscles. The combination of the pulling up AND down was causing the strain in my lower back and THAT was what was making it painful to do most anything. I had to go to physical therapy for a while and now just have to stretch regularly to keep the problem at bay. I do notice that if I go a few days WITHOUT stretching my hamstrings I get tight in my lower back and start to get pain with simple tasks as well.

I bring this up again because it may be your mattress causing the problem but then again it may be something else and a mattress may not help with that problem.

I hope you get it worked out - I know just for comforts sake I got one of those mattress pads to put on top of my mattress and I sleep a bit better with it - I do NOT toss and turn as much as usual.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Thank you all for bringing this up. My lower back has continued to become increasingly painful over the past 6 months. I chalked it up to poor posture and driving too much on my job.... maybe it's more than that.

Thanks for giving me some ideas guys

My lower back hurts more often than not, it seems. I wasn't sure what it could be attributed to, but when I had my first DEXA scan last year, they said that I have osteopenia in my lower back. I don't know if that's the only cause of my back pain, but that could be a potential factor to consider.

I have really bad back pain too and mine gets worse after sitting too long - stressfull work days, etc. We also got a nice new mattress about 1 year ago and it's nice, but I certainly still have back pain. Mine isn't caused by the bed, it's muscle related. The only thing I've ever notice that helps is what the chiropracter does with those electric pulses pads on your back muscles.

A thread from a while ago talked about a product that one of this site's sponsors have, called a TENS 3000 unit:
http://forums.cysticfibrosis.c...tens%20unit

Here's the product link too if you're interested:

I haven't gotten one of these yet b/c I've forgotten about it until just recently. I really want to see if it's as good as what the chiropracter used!

Just another idea.....maybe try that before spending all the $ on another mattress. When I get one I'll let you know how it goes.

I have a regular firm mattress (that is now over 10 years old ), and I put 2 regular egg crate mattress toppers on it, and 2 memory foam toppers (same material as Temperpedic ) on top of that, and my sore joints and back pain (both lower and right below my shoulders, from mild scoliosis) have dramatically improved, to the point that it is actually rare for me to have pain when I wake up, since I did that. I would love to have a Temperpedic!
