Throat Culture Positive for MRSA

Hello, Brett is 8 months old, and tested positive on his throat culture last Tuesday for MRSA...They want to put him to sleep next Wednesday and test his lungs...I can't really get a clear idea from the nurse what all the procedure involves. She made it sound like it wasn't a big deal. She said if they found it in his lungs they would give him high doses of antibiotics.

He is currently pancreatic insufficient, but has not had any lung issues to date. Has anyone been through this procedure? Thanks!

Dori - Mom to Brett, 8 mos. w/CF DF508/3359delC, Brandon - No CF, Carrier of 3359delC

Is the procedure you are referring to a bronchoscopy? Does that ring a bell? A bronchoscpy allows the doctor to use a scope with a camera attached to take a look deep into the lungs, and also take samples from them. These samples can then be tested for MRSA or anything else that may be growing. Yes, patients are put under general anesthesia for a bronch. While your nurse is right in saying it is a fairly simple and very routine procedure, I also don't feel it should be taken lightly the first time. And certainly not for an 8 month old. Don't get me wrong. Your osn will be fine, as this is a very common procedure. But as a parent you deserve a little more than a "it's no big deal" response from your nurse. Do you feel comfortable calling her and asking her more questions about their routine at their hospital? This will help you feel better prepared the day of hte test.

Best of luck to you. My son has had two bronchs and both have been very straighforward and have been good for diagnostic purposes. I am not a believer in bronchs as routine procedure, but it sounds like culturing MRSA at 8 mos. is good reason to go ahead and run the test. The sample they get from the bronch culture will allow them to make sure he is on the perfect meds to treat him and try to eradicate it.

My son at age 4 had the same experience. He cultured MRSA during a routine throat culture. I was not happy at all. The doctor then decided to do a bronch to see if it was in the lungs. This was his second bronch. He did really well for both of them, I actaully watched one procedure. Unfortauntely the MRSA was in his lungs as well. So we did some heavy duty antibiotics including IVs. i will say that we were unsuccessful getting rid of the MRSA despite our best efforts. But i know others who have had success so you never know! Best of luck. By the way, he is still quite healthy with the MRSA.

My son cultured MRSA as well, but it was not in his lungs. He had it done in the hospital, and, as we all know, MRSA is rampant there. It was just a contaminated specimen, supposedly. He did have a bronch, and everything went fine during the procedure. I was totally panicked the whole time b/c he'd never had a "surgical" procedure. Its not actually a surgery, but its billed as one. And total sedation is involved. Valuable information was obtained from the bronch, and I'm glad it was done. Also, all other avenues had been covered to no avail before the bronch was done. It was a last resort.

Keep us posted, and I hope everything works out!
