Throat Cultures

Thanks guys for your input......I was hoping this make clinic less scary for him. It's like he knows it's coming...it's the last thing they do to him. So he freaks out and screams the entire 2 1/2 hrs and trys to break out of the room. He knows what's coming next. I'm bringing his Dad to help until we move past this.

It's sooo hard I know the clinic thinks he is nuts. All the other babies are quiet, and then it's a freak show in our room. (THE SCREAMING and ARM CROSSING....ALL DONE...ALLD DONE is what he screams to the doctors..) But, I know he is normaly really sweet and calm...with just a touch of crazy
Thanks,
I would call before your next clinic appt and ask about getting the sputum culture taken first thing next time- just to get it over with and see if the rest of the appt goes smoother that way. It needs to be done, but the anticipation is worse than the deed.

I agree with Harriett's idea. Or better yet, if you are close enough to the hospital, go in on another day just to get the swab done really quick and make it a really fun thing with a special lunch out afterwards (no matter what) plus a special toy bonus IF he does it well.

My son went through this and once he figured out that fighting made it alot worse, he settled down. But of course we had to get him to the point of not fighting so he could see for himself how quickly it could go. So we tried this approach with him and it worked- eventually. :)

The good news is that they get older and he will settle down. It's would just be nice if it was sooner rather than later, right?

Two or three clinic visits ago Emily (4 years old then) was wailing in anticipation of the throat swab. Our new clinc nurse said to her very matter of factly, "Well, Emily, if you can cough up a bit hunk of stuff for me into a cup I won't have to put the sticks in your throat." At once the crying stopped, Emily said, "Really?" and proceeded to work on bringing up a pretty sizeable "loogie."

Since then, she has practiced couging stuff up from time to time and can do it on command at each clinic visit. She always impresses the nurses! Clinic visits are much less trumatic.

Now, if we could just find a way to make the blood draws go better.

Oh! I remember those days so well! Both girls would be in tears over it! But now Kayla has productive coughs and can cough a bunch of mucus in the cup. Hannah still cannot do that and still gets the swab, but she is fine with it. It does get better
