Throat mucus

OK, maybe weird question. Maggie had a cold, stuffy nose, sore throat throat clearing cough. She is on oral anti's and all her usual nebs/VEST and stuff. She is not acting sick, doing regular activities. She is on day10 of her anti and still she wakes up with mucus in her throat which she needs to cough and clear. She said to me"everyday I wake up and it's still there" Any things that you can think of that can help her clear it? Her culture that she just had was normal flora, which is wierd cause she usually grows MRSA, even in rare amounts, it usually shows up. Just being an overprotective mom who doesn't want to be traveling with her and have her pick something else up this lovely holiday season.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> She on anti's to treat staph not MRSA right now.

Is she having post nasal drainage? If she is that could be why she's waking up with it still there. Accumulation during sleep. That gunky feeling in your throat that no matter how many times you swallow it just seems to just hang there.

At four yrs. old I can't think of much to help. Have you tried getting her to gargle? That seems simple enough to teach a 4yr old how to do. If you can get her to do it, try warm salt water and see if maybe that will help break it up enough to actually get down, or up and out. That's about my only suggestion. Hope it helps in some way.

It sounds like it could be post nasal drip. My son has a lot of trouble with it. My son's doctor prescribed atrovent nasal spray. It dries up that mucus in his nose that always drips into his throat at night and makes him cough and gag. Even regular saline nasal spray might help though, with a good nose blowing afterwards. (My almost 3 year old hasn't quite mastered the art of blowing his nose yet).

I agree with the others that it sounds like post nasal drip. My daughter (4wcf) has gagged on it while trying to cough it up and has even thrown up (weak gag reflex!). What helps her the most is:

-Sinus Rinse - Neilmed-uses it daily and loves it! (this cleans out the mucus before it can drain)

-Mucinex (this thins the mucus, making it easier to cough up)

Good luck!
