thrush from zithromax

Oh no! I began having a vaginal yeast infection from using Zithromax and yesterday decided to skip my Zithromax dose and began using Monistat. Then, just this morning, when Alex was feeding I felt a really hot, burning sensation from my nipple all the way up to my armpit. Based on what I had read while attempting to see what was okay to treat my vaginal yeast infection with while nursing, I'm almost positive I have thrush. What should I do? I was going to quit nursing soon anyway, so should I just stop? What's the best treatment for thrush? Please, please I really need help.

Check your temp. If you have a temp you may have mastitis. I wasn't aware thrush has the radiating feeling. I wouldn't dx breastfeedign until you know what you are dealing with. Are you at increased risk for mastitis culturing MRSA? As you probably know I feel I started culturing MRSA after having mastitis. Mastitis is usually caused by a staph infection so it makes sense. It's an opportunistic bug so it looks for the weakest place which was my lungs. The reason you want to continue to breastfeed is that Alex is best at getting the milk out over pumping as you know. As you get over the mastitis you want to get all the milk out because it also has the infection but his stomach can handle killing the bacteria. If you leave the milk in there you risk an abcess which is a closed area of infection that he (and you)will not be able to drain rather you'll have to get it drained. So keep bf'ing and I did also have thrush of the nipple which I treated with nystatin (and bactroban in case there was bacteria too). I was able to bf with both drugs on my nipple. I would call you OB they will know if this radiating feeling you are having is characteristic of just thrush or if it is more likely mastitis. The treatment for mastitis was doxycycline or dicloxicyclin can't remember. Good luck!

Hi Jeana,

So you have white patches in your mouth/throat? I pretty much have thrush all the time from Advair, so I take a daily dose of Nystatin to keep it away. I don't think people have as much of a problem with thrush as I do, but I always seem to fall in that 1-2%!!! Anyhow, I do believe the only thing to get rid of thrush is to treat it with Nystatin or some other antifungal. I don't know if you've ever tried Diflucan, but that should get rid of both thrush and a yeast infection at once. I think it's a category C, so it might be good to stop BF-ing if you're going to use that. But I'm pretty sure Nystatin is safe because I used it during my pregnancy.

Don't stop! Especially if it is mastitis. If it is thrush there are a few things you can do. Since it is is saturday and not a day when the dr is open, get some gentian violet at the drug store. Paint your nipple and areola with it and then have Alex latch on. Do this topless and don't put any clothes on him (it stains). This will coat the inside of his mouth. You're going to have to do this twice a day for several days. Also, get some probiotics asap. You can get powdered form for Alex and pill form for you. When the drs office opens monday, call and ask for diflucan (it is safe for BFing!! Don't worry). If it is truly thrush then you're going to need more than 1 pill. I think it is like 7 days worth? Can't remember. Scarlett and I fought thrush when she was a few weeks old.

I second everything Laura said about Mastitis....stopping suddenly would be bad. I never had mastitis but I know it can be really awful to deal with (flu like symptoms, pain, etc). But continual nursing is good for it.

Oh one more thing it could be is a plugged duct. Nursing is also the best thing for a plugged duct. I had those all the time when Logan was a baby. They are very painful to the touch and I could feel a lump.

I feel your pain about the yeast infection. I HATE ZITHROMAX for that reason. I still take it 3 times per week because I feel it has a great benefit for me but I get yeast infections all the time... I'm talking like once a month. I just started taking probiotics again and I'm crossing my fingers that they keep the yeasties at bay.
