tightness in throat...weird

Hey All, I haven't posted for a while here, Ive been doing well though. Today I'm noticing some real tightness in my throat, even to the point that when I swallow it goes down a little difficult. I didnt have this the other day. Yesterday I was really cold, couldnt get my core temp up (it was in the 30's and snowing). I finally took a bath and got my temp up, and have been fine. I dont feel sick at all, and its not an allergic reaction. It kinda feels like a burning in my chest. I took a pepcid and drank some milk. I'm going to take a few ibuprofens to bring down any inflammation if there is any. I'm thinking it may be related to the cold weather. Never experienced this before, guess I'm getting old. Anyone experience this? I took a benadryl too just in case it was an allergic reaction to something but that had no effects. I'm going to hit the gym and see what that does.

Try googling vocal cord dysfunction--it mimics asthma, but is more of an issue with inhalation rather than exhalation. It can be caused/aggravated by reflux, stress, hard-sports...maybe cold too, I don't know.
Just a thought.

Here you go: cold air is a trigger.

The "cure" is to do pursed lip exhalation. The back-pressure of air when the lips are almost closed is supposed to force open the vocal cords.

There are some viruses that cause my kids to get croup and cause me to get a flare up of this. Ibuprofen seems to help, like you wrote about.

(Oh, at National Jewish they probed me for this and I didn't have it, but they insisted that I do anyway. I have asthma too. But like the VCD literature says, the only "attacks" I have had are during hard exercise or profound upset...seems like VCD.)

Melissa,
Fascinating! I have never heard of this. I think I may have it, too.
