time in hospital after transplant

I am curious what the average time is for days in the hospital after your transplant?

How many days were you in before you could go home?

Hey,
I was in the hospital for 3 weeks but only because I had a side effect from the pain meds. From a lung stand point I was ready to go after a week.

I was in 12 days. I would have been out probably a day or two earlier aside from some drainage issues so they left the chest tubes in a little longer for me. Otherwise, I was feeling pretty great. I'd say the biggest factors for how quickly you're released tend to be 1) chest tubes, 2) how quickly you can get back on your feet and get moving again, 3) GI issues, and 4) infection. Definitely the faster you start sitting up in a chair, moving around, and showing them that you can do basic stuff like go to the bathroom and take care of yourself, the better off you're going to be for an early discharge.

I was discharged at 12 days - was almost released at 8 but had a partial collapse in one lung that morning and they had to reinsert a small chest tube. They were still going to send me home, but I asked to stay until they took it out. They took it out day 10 and kept me to make sure I was good without the tube in before discharging me.

I was home in 6 days and I was told I have the record recovery time.

That said, it is not typical and, pre-TX, I mentally prepared for 2 weeks.

Other than a dedication to exercise, I don't have any other secrets. I had the best surgeon in the world, and I was blessed with no complications.

Time in the hospital post TX is a blur anyway. Sure, while you're living it you don't think it's going to end, but it does....and soon enough, it's just a distant memory. Good luck!
