hey everyone

i am currently having some unusual (for me) symptoms. first i have been having headaches for the past week. Also, my hands, feet, and currently all of my legs are feeling tingly. i just feel all around blah and can hardly keep my head up off the pillow, couch, table whatever. i feel thirsty all the time no matter how much i drink.

any ideas on what this could be? i'm planning on calling my clinic on monday, but with my trip to africa only 25 days away i'm reluctant to go into the doctors.

thanks so much!

Don't want to depress you but have you been tested for diabetes?

Being thirsty all the time is a symptom. My daughter was diagnosed CFRD last year. She used to feel tired all the time. Even now she is on insulin tablets she still gets like that if her sugar levels are all wrong.
Hope this helps.

I would say diabetes as well. A couple of the big symptoms I had was consistantly thirsty - no matter how much I got to drink, I was still very thirsty - nothing would do it for me. I was also always feeling tired and rundown, I could barely get out of bed, off the couch, etc. Headaches I would have as well. Whenever my sugars run high I get headaches. I would definitly get your doc to check you out for CF related diabetes. The sooner you get treatment for it, the better. If it is diabetes, try to get yourself an endocrinologist who has dealt with CF before, so that you won't have to cut your carb intake, etc. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Something else: especially because of your planned trip you should see the doctor and do all necessary and possible tests now and quick! Don´t make the mistake to go to Africa when not feeling well!!

I made this mistake once, when I had already booked a vacation in the Dom.Rep.
I could do nothing in that 2 weeks, had high fevers, could hardly walk, because I could not breathe, sleep only in a upright position, needed the doctor in the hotel (and was lucky, because he had studied in the USA and therefore knew something about cf and had very new equipment);it was terrible and the flight back to Germany was too.I have been three weeks to the hospital afterwards for the first time, needing oxygen and IV...

And as you want to work there and stay not only for a few days, if I remember right and will already have to adapt to the climate, the food and so on, you should only go, if you are shure you feel healthy!

Good luck!!!

I was thinking maybe some circulation issue?
I would definately rule out diabetes first-get checked.
BUt I have lots of vascular/circulation issues and part of them is lots of tingling and headaches.

hope you get an answer

Hi there,

I agree with all the other posts, get yourself checked out quick before you leave on your trip otherwise you run the risk of deteriorating whilst away and that would be awful.

Lethargy and thirst could mean diabetes. Check to see if you have a temp because acute viral illnesses almost always present with high temps so if your temp is ok, then it's probably not a viral infection.

As for the tingling ... I'm not sure. I know when I have coughing fits my fingers tingle for a while after but then they're ok. Maybe you're just run down and need to rest? Either way, it's best to be safe and get things checked out.

Hope you feel better soon.

you have the same symptoms i had right before i was diagnosed with diabetes, The ongoing thirst, the ongoing tiredness and i had tingling also that was annoying since no-one knew what was causing it. I would definietly get checked for diabetes as soon as you can.

i got the tingles too when i had steroid induced diabetes. like you, no one knew why. i knew it was the diabetes of course but doctors just wouldnt recognize the symptom as they think its something only long term diabetics with poor management get.

Actually I was thinking those symptoms point to lack of o2...I don't know what your cf is like, but if you have bad cf, you may need to take a bit of o2. If you have mild cf with good pfts this is probably not the cause. Is there any time of day where your symptoms are worse?

Sorry just re-reading the post again now, yeah sounds like high or low blood sugars to me. Get it checked out. If it is diabetes this doesn't mean you cant go on your trip to africa.

Hi all

thanks for your responses!

i ended up going to the ER last night because when i called the hospital they said it could be a stroke (due to tingling) and wanted to make sure it wasn't.
Anyways, it takes an hour to drive to my hospital, and by the time they checked my blood sugar it had been probably 5 or 6 hours since i had eaten, my blood sugar was 101...so they aren't worried about diabetes, but i'm still concerned because it had been so long since i'd eaten anything. Is this an unreasonable concern?

anyways, they came away with saying i had a 'complicated migrain' and gave me some motrin (very worth spending 4 hours in the middle of the night in a waiting room). so now i have to go see a neurologist before i leave, but i am still going to try and set up a formal diabetes test before i leave too.

thanks again

Uli,

is this where you drink a sugary drink like pop, and then they take your blood every 1/2 hour for 2 or 3 hours?

That's what they did with me. Gave me juice and then checked my sugar off and on. Sometimes with diabetics, if you don't have food in you, your sugar can go low. With CFRD your pancreas usually does work, just not very well. I know every once and awhile my pancreas will kick in a bit and work for a tiny bit, then I'm back to square one.

It took a while for the doctor to discover the beast of diabetes hiding within, because it seemed each time they checked my blood sugar my levels would be fine. Then one day they got it at the right time and my blood sugar was well over 1000. Needless to say i wound up spending some time in the hospital. A fasting glucose tollerance test is the one where you drink a very sweetened drink ( tastes like soda) after having nothing to eat or drink after midnight, and they draw blood every 1/2 hour or so for about 3 hours.

They get the long-term-sugar by blood-test. It shows, if your bloodsugars have been too high during the last months.

There was a test I had done, but it is very new. I had a little needle inserted in my tummy for 3 days. The needle was attached to a little monitor which I held in my pocket or clipped on to my belt. Everytime I ate something or drank something, I would press a button on the monitor. Overall I think the monitor checked my blood sugar something like 3000 times (or 300?). Then the monitor was hooked up to a computer where my results were analyized. They could see the time of day where my sugars rose. The person who ran it said that the fasting glucose test can often miss things. Just food for thought....
