Tire Easily?

When Katy's pancreatic insufficiency was worsening, and prior to her diagnosis, she pretty much lost all her energy; wanted to be held all the time or just lay around; was very tired. She is MUCH better now but will usually fall asleep in the car on the way home.

I would suggest that you make sure that all digestive issues have been addressed. Katy is on a typical regimen - enzymes, Prevacid, vitamax. She also is on Ursodiol for liver/gall bladder. There could be food issues as well - search for posts from "Foody" and "Energygal" for ideas there.

I don't think it's all that unusual for a 13 month old to be sleepier than usual for a few days running. It is a common time for both physical growth spurts and "developmental ledges" when new skills and concepts are being internalized. The body, brain, central nervous system, even the endocrine system need more rest as they go through these changes. I am surprised, though, that your dr. suggested that cf kids did not need extra sleep...I am sure it is an individual thing, but as a whole, every thing I've read suggests that they do! If you really think its excessive, though, and he seems letharagic even while awake, make an appointment. You'll feel better. good luck!

For a one year old, they need about 12 hours of sleep a night. Even my 3 yr old w/o CF could sleep 12 hours, and even take a nap. Now my 9 yr old needs 9-10 hrs, and sometimes more, I don't think because of his CF, but after he has had a few action packed days, it catches up to him.

CF can cause exhaustion more easily, but I would not think so at a young age with no lung problems

Thanks for the replies. Like I said last night, Porter fell asleep during CPT at 6:30pm and he got up at 8am this morning! My girls were good sleepers when they were younger and my 4 year old still takes a nap 4x a week on preschool days. I guess it is just hard to tell if it is typical or CF related when he gets sooooo tired. Isn't that how it is with a lot of things <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">? I don't think it is excessive so I am not going to worry about it. I am going to chalk it up to him being a busy busy toddler. Thanks again.

Is he getting dinner in him before he knocks out for the night? Does he seem more sleepy after eating? If so is any certain foods that are more obvious. I really believe its just his body needing it, but have his vitamin levels check to be sure there isnt any underlying problem. As I said my daughter will be 9 on Monday and still needs 10-12 hours of sleep. She can function on less, but the lack of it definitely shows in her attitude.

He does get dinner at 5 or 5:30. We wake him up at 11pm or so for a milk snack (he goes right back to sleep). I have not noticed any food connection though I will be more observant. I will ask about vitamin levels although he was bumped up a month ago when he turned one to 2.0ml of Source CF vitamins. The more I think about it, the more I think he has just had a busy few days. My mom is visiting and we have been doing a lot of activities in between naps (West Side Market, Library playplace, Nature Center...)
I will just watch it closely. It is a question I have had since DX and like I said I dismissed it when Dr. said he won't, as a general rule during healthy times, need more sleep than average as a CFer.
