To blog or not to blog....

Hello, everyone!

OK so I'm thinking of joining the world of bloggin and/or posting on facebook or myspace as an easy way to network and/or keep family and friends apprised of my ongoings without having to email everyone directly with "updates".

Here is my dilemma, and I'm hoping there are many on here with information and experience with this...

First, I'm not thinking I'll blog on this particular site. I worry that if I blog on cf.com and post and answer questions, those who read my blog may also read questions/answers, etc. that I'd prefer to remain private. For example, at one point, I'd posted regarding my friends not understanding me and my CF and if I'd have a blog on cf.com its likely they would have become interested in the boards and probably found my post regarding themselves. I know its public domain so they could look it up and find cf.com and my posts, but I just don't want them to have such a direct link to my "secret" CF support group via my blog.

So, are there any particular blogspots you would recommend? Is it possible to network through blogs (i.e. do searches for blogs from a certain high school alumnae, etc.)? Or, is networking only possible through myspace or facebook?

Also, if I can only find and network with long-lost friends/family via myspace or facebook, is there one you would recommend me using?

I have been hesitant to start a blog to post feelings, thoughts, etc. cause personally, I think such things can backfire if a potential employer, friend or family whom you blog about, etc. happens to search and find it. Are there any blogs or networking sites that don't show pictures, information, etc. unless you are accepted to view them? For example, if I blog or post on another site and don't want employers, etc. to be able to just do a random search for me, is there a way to essentially keep that information private and viewable only to those I choose?

Anyhoo... Sorry this got so long. I'm just really hesistant to start doing this, but in the same respect, I'd LOVE to reconnect with old friends that I haven't heard from in years. In the same respect, if I'm blogging about the fear I have about going on oxygen or something, I don't want an employer (who may discriminate) to see that and freak out.

(p.s. I KNOW THIS board is public domain as well and anyone who is anyone can look up my posts, but for some reason I think its easier to find if I have a specific page set up all about myself, versus randomly posting on cf.com... That's JMO though.)

Thanks for any advice!!

I started a google blog and it was really easy. I haven't written much yet but it was easy.

You can set your security settings on Facebook, but I think with the internet there are always loopholes. Basically, when posting stuff on the internet, if you are not okay with everyone knowing, it is best not to post it. I do post cf updates on my facebook but some other personal info I try to leave off.

I've had a live journal for years. It's pretty good, I think.

Xanga is another platform. There are blogrings (groups that you can connect through, eg. Cystic Fibrosis blogring where you can connect with other people of that same interest).

I prefer xanga because of it offers multiple privacy functions. For example you can restrict your blog to xanga friends only or only to people who are signed in to xanga. You also have the option of having a public blog and having protected posts which allows you to restrict certain posts to only specific people of your choosing (on xanga). The limitation of this is that generally if you're going to restrict your blog to friends only then your friends have to have a xanga to read yours. Google blog might be more flexible in this area since a lot of people have gmail accounts. Also as a side note if you have a facebook account there are ways to import blog entries from other sites so if it is easier to share your information that way it would be something to look into.

Generally the most popular blogging sites (as far as I know) are livejournal, blogger, xanga, and myspace (kind of though it's more social networking than blogging). My suggestion would be to try them all and see which one you prefer.
