1. At what age did your parents hand over all treatments to you. When did they make your meds and treatments your full responsibility? I was very young around the age of six or seven when, I remembered to take my enzymes. I always had used Chest Physical therapy and needed someone to help me with cupping my back. I started cupping my own sides and chest at the age of twelve. I was even able to hit my back(I have long arms).

2. At what age did they stop going into the doctors office with you? AS soon as I could drive. I would go by myself and I moved out of my parents home when I was 18. It was always nice when they would come along after that but that only happened if they were down from NYC visiting or I was in the hospital and of course Transplant life.

3. When do you feel your parents made all aspects of CF (meds, calorie intake, setting up doc appointments, etc) your full responsibility? When I left home, I did it all.

My parents have no clue to what medications I take or how much I eat. Thankfully they help me in other areas that are more important.

1. At what age did your parents hand over all treatments to you. When did they make your meds and treatments your full responsibility? I only had to do enzymes, since nebulized treatments we're around (that I know of). But probably at age 10 or so I took responsibility for enzymes.

2. At what age did they stop going into the doctors office with you? When I moved out at 17, just after graduating.

3. When do you feel your parents made all aspects of CF (meds, calorie intake, setting up doc appointments, etc) your full responsibility? When I moved out on my own.

edited to add: I hope Courtney is feeling better!

1. At what age did your parents hand over all treatments to you. When did they make your meds and treatments your full responsibility?
Probably around the age of 16. Though I will be honest my mom still asks me if I have taken my meds. She asked me every meal I ate WITH her up until about 1 yr ago when I told her if she asked me again I would completely refuse to take them. Then she stopped. Now I have asked her to remind me because with all of the meds I am on post transplant I can not remember to take them at times and sometimes I can't remember whether or not I have already taken them.

2. At what age did they stop going into the doctors office with you?
16. When I hit 16 my parents made me get my license (yes you read that properly they MADE me get my license) and they told me that I would be going to my docs appointments on my own. I went alone for most of my appointments after that. Typically I only took a parent if I was sick and we thought I would be admitted. That lasts even to this day - if I am sick and go to the doc I normally take someone with me - be it Kurt, a parent or stepparent. Also to add when I was around 15 my parents started to let me make decisions about my healthcare. They would kind of police the decisions that I made and make sure they were appropriate, but they wanted me to feel confident in taking over caring for myself and "calling the shots" when I did finally hit 18.

3. When do you feel your parents made all aspects of CF (meds, calorie intake, setting up doc appointments, etc) your full responsibility?
I really started to take on the majority of things at the age of 16. By 18 everything was my business for the most part. Though I will say that to this day I still get the questions about calorie intake, enzymes and before transplant the nebs and CPT questions, now I just get the did you take your pills, blood pressure, weight, PFTs and so on. I have been the one to take responsibility for the decisions in regards to my healthcare - completely - since I was 18 but a parent is still a parent and mine ask all the time about all of the things you mention, and if I haven't done something trust me I hear about it.

Really my whole life she made it my job. She would keep an eye on me and if I did not have my meds out she would say something. But as far as keeping up with my health I was always the one in charge. I would run my own ivs and everything. By the time I was prob about 16 is when she stopped most of the over watch but she was always there if I needed her. I think its really important to let kids do this on there own. Even if they fall sick once due to there own fault they will know next time that they need to do there treatments. Its all a learning process and the more you let them take care of there Cf the more control they are going to have over it.
