To the "chubby" CFers

Hi all,
something has been in the back of my mind recently, and more so, reading about people on this site with struggles to maintain their weight. I have also struggles maintaing my weight, but not gaining weight, but trying to keep the weight off!
My pulmo has not mentioned anything about it, but I have talked to my diestist and she has given my some diets to try to lose weight, and sometimes I do, but then gain weight again. When I see her, she asks how's my weight, not thinking about that I am not on of those CFers that she needs to ask that question.
I wonder if my doctors are happy with my weight, and expect that maybe in the future an exacerbation will make me lose weight... so far, I haven't experienced that.
I wonder if my weight has an inpact on my overall health..
To my fellow "chubby" CFers, what do your doctors say about your weight? Are they happy about they way you are, do they recommend to lose some? Does it affect your health? Your pfts?
Please share,
thanks

I am on the chubby side, my pulmo is okay with it though....whenever I am sick, I tend to drop weight fast so that extra padding comes in handy.. It's not unusual for me to drop 20 lbs in a severe exacerbation. I do want to lose a little though, it's funny, a few years back, I couldn't gain to save my life, now that I am 40, it is easier to put those pounds on especially since I am not physically active (on O2/vent.....walking is tough enough for me).

I think in general Drs. like CFers to be on the chubby side. Yes, it is because when we get sick we tend to drop weight. I was overweight to the point of it affecting my health. I've been on weight watchers (I have done ww several times) & have lost 17 lbs .. I am determined to keep it off this time ! We will see lol I tend to go off the wagon when I get sick. I feel like I deserve to eat to my hearts content because I am upset w/ being in hosp ..

I am on the side of chubby. My doctors are tickled... they love it. I hate it!!! My joints are taxed due to the extra weight. I have started to loose weight the past few months (haven't changed a thing). I am hoping cardiac/pulmonary rehab will help me drop the rest of the weight that I want to loose.

I am heavier as well. My dr's don't seem to have an issue with it because I do drop weight with an exacerbation. Usually around 10 or 20 pounds in a couple weeks. I have tried to lose weight, but nothing seems to work. I figure the weight will come in handy one day.

I am heavier as well. As much as the CF docs love it, I hate it! I also had trouble gaining in high school (10-15 years ago) and now I have no trouble at all keeping weight on. Even when I am sick, I don't tend to lose very much, maybe a couple of pounds, but I gain it right back when I am well!

I am overweight. I had 50lbs. to lose and still have about 38lbs to go. My CF dr. said she would rather have a patient overweight than underweight any day, but she agrees with me that if I lost some of my excess weight I may feel better. More energy, not as easily sob, etc.

It's hard losing weight when you have an illness like CF. Every time I get into the habit of exercising (which I hate) I get sick and have to stop, but I'm trying to persevere.

I have always been a healthy normal weight as a teen and young adult until the CFRD. Then I gained 30 lbs. When I got sick, there is NO weight loss at all. I started exercising like crazy and totally changed my diet. Lost 35 lbs and my lung function increased about 20%. But now the weight is starting to creep back on. All my life I've eaten whatever I've wanted and as much as I wanted. Now I cant, and the habits are just simply hard to change. I LIKE to eat. With regard to my docs opinion, he was fine with me being a little chubby, but seemed happier when I was thinner and super fit. He supported that change wholeheartedly. My lung function certainly improved a lot with the weight loss and exercise.

I'm at a normal weight, according to my doctors. Not overweight (according to them. I would be fine with losing a couple of pounds.) However, as others have said, the moment I get sick, I drop 5-10 pounds like /that/, and got down to an unhealthy weight last year when I was sick for multiple months. I've put that weight back on, slowly. Now, if I am slightly more than I would like to weigh, I remember that it's insurance, because when I get sick, it will go away.
