Tobramycin

I just got done with 3 weeks of tobra and vanco. The last few days I can hear this howling/ringing in my right ear only. This ear drum ruptured twice as a kid, so it has always been sensitive to certain sounds. Luckily, I can turn the radio or tv up a bit & not hear the howling.

My question is, am I stuck with this, or will it gradually get better (or worse)? Anything that would reverse it?

Landy....Vanco and Tobra both are hard on your ears. I am assuming you had your blood levels checked while you were on those meds to make sure they had the right dose for you. Others may be able to speak to this more than I can. My ears were very sensitive to Tobra the 1x I did it. Noises just sounded louder and more pronounced. I had some effect from my 3 weeks on it. I had an audiogram that showed some slight loss in the higher frequencies then I had another repeat audiogram a year later and that had cleared up. I do still have ringing in my ears though. I think some of that comes from the inhaled meds too though.....Tobi and Collistin. I have kind of gotten use to it. I would have a hearing eval. though just to get a baseline for yourself or to know if you have experienced any loss. I know where you can probably get one for free....I'll PM you<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Definately make an appointment with your nearest audiologist, they have lots of tools now to determine hearing loss.

That said, I had "plugged" ears but nothing was ever shown on my hearing exams, in fact they were pretty much perfect. My doctor seemed to think it had something to do with the mist going up my throat and irritating my ears but causing no damage. I go back in a month after my tobi on month so I'll let you know how it goes if I remember.
