Ok so they keep increasing his dose becuase his peak levels are not high enough. Is this something I should be worried about? The nurse told me that the pharmacist thought that his peak levels should be much higher but they weren't. I don't get it...they should be higher because they told me he is on a very high dose. The doctor told us we might be in longer than we thought. He is also on cefepime IV. Well any advice would be great. I am kind of devastaded over this whole pseudomonas thing. I wasn't expecting it. CF keeps knocking us down, but my little guy is so incredibly strong. I am so proud of him and so thankful that I get to be his mommy. Thanks guys for any advice. Hope everyone is well!

I understand your concern. We've all been there.

First of all, Marty's peak and trough numbers have nothing to do with the pseudomonas he is growing. His level of med not being high enough does not mean that his specific pa requires a higher dose. When they run a peak and trough they are basically testing to make sure your son has the right level of medication in his system to be affective, yet still be safe. Everyone's body will metabolize the medication differently, so there is no 'one dose fits all' that can be used.

I just recieved a call yesterday that they are switching Andrew's dose of amikacin up from 500 to 700 ml because his trough came back low. I'm not concerned about it at all. The way I look at it is, if his troughs are low he is not getting too much medication, therefor not harming him. Upping it is making sure he gets into the range where it is affective.

I hope this helps. Pseudomonas is scary at first, but you rae doing the right thing in treating it aggressively!
