Toddler w/ CF Diet

Hi!

My daughter Alysa was diagnosed with CF back in November and I am still having a heck of a time trying to get her calories right (I dont really know much about them to start with).

Does anyone have any good meal ideas or a helpful website I could go to? I know that she needs extra butter and cheese and stuff but the poor thing can only eat so much Mac and Cheese.

She just turned two so some toddler friendly meals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Mydaughter, Hannah, just turned two in March. We found out she has CF when she was 7 mos old. Her main issue right now is digestion...thankfully. The lung stuff scares me terribly...I try to always feed her what we are eating..so she doesn't feel any different..needless to say, I'm a chubby girl, but workin on that issue for myself. I try healthy foods and add high fat items along with it..broccoli, carrots & ranch dressing..cheese cubes....peanut butter is great & you can do alot with it....casseroles are great too...broccoli, cheese & rice.....mashed potatoes with sour cream or cream cheese whipped in & add a little dill & butter....meatloaf, ice cream...if she hasn't eaten alot of high fat items lately, try a frozen dinner like alfredo..they are full of fat & a quick lunch to fix...

All of this I have had to work at..just play around with different items & remember, foods you try to limit for yourself are great things to put in her diet...but don't forget to make it as healthy as you can....when you find something she likes, experiment...don't give her alot of Cheerios & things that will fill her up @ snacks & then she won't eat her lunch or supper....I made that mistake....peanut butter cookies or cheese cubes or yogurt is a great snack...and always remember to not skip the enzymes..we have to change up dosage & how we give it to digest as much fat as possible...at one ponit we would give part of her enzymes in the beginning of her meal & then another during and another @ the end.....you will always need to watch how she is digesting & keep in touch with her docs..GOOD LUCK!

Thank you, that is really helpful.

Yeah Alysa's is mostly her lungs - we are currently waiting to see if her pseudomonous is gone (developed that in Jan but caught almost right away) and we have had to change her enzymes a few times now giving her two at first then one about 10 mins into her meal.

I try and give Alysa whatever my husband and I are eating but just add in the "extras" that we dont require.

I totally forgot about peanut butter! She loves it in cookies... guess I should start baking lol.

Thanks again!

My 2 yr old wcf really likes peanut butter balls for a snack. Mix equal parts peanut butter, honey and powdered milk. (We actually prefer a bit less honey). I keep it in the fridge.
He also likes couscous. Those little pasta balls that you just soak in hot water. I buy the mixes in the box, and add olive oil.
Avocado slices.
Apple slices w/peanut butter.
Soft tacos filled w/small meat chunks, cheese and chopped spinach or lettuce and salsa.

Can you tell I like the easy stuff?

Nothing wrong with easy stuff!

I am actually 6 months preg (with another little girl who has CF) and easy is probably the best for me right now.

I'll have to try these out on her but if you have any more ideas please keep 'em coming!

DS likes yogurt, spagettios, noodles with butter & grated cheese. I used to cut up ham patties and cheese slices into different shapes. Peanut butter & jelly with butter. He prefers the yogurts in the bright colors, but once in awhile, I can get him to eat either the whole milk or greek style yogurts. Somedays he'd have the same thing day after day after day -- that's all he wanted to eat.

Add an ounce of cream to his glass of whole milk.

We were thrilled when DS started eating hamburger patties and hot dogs. I've made hot dog octopuses -- slice the bottom 2/3 into lengthwise slices usually can only quarter it and drop it into boiling water -- the "legs" curl up and look like an octopus.

Pancakes & waffles. Cheese pizza.

When he was 1 1/2 - 2 I could get by with giving him convenience foods and/or casseroles and I'd throw in a dash of olive oil -- chicken ala king on toast, beef stew, but these days he doesn't want to have anything to do with "dirty food" -- anything with a meat or cream sauce.

Awesome thank you sooo much!

I have been doing lots of yogurt, hot dogs and homo milk (didnt think to add cream though). I have her diet down pretty much its more like finding things to put into stuff to help her gain weight and get the calories where I have issues.

I feel so much better now, thanks everyone and keep 'em coming <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
