Jasey always has mucus in her stools but it's getting worse. I took pics and sent to her doctors yesterday. Does anyone else have this problem?

We had issues with that from time to time with DS when he was a baby. He'd usually have loose stools, but once in awhile he'd get constipated and we'd have to give him milk of mag. What came thru was usually encased in mucus.

I would have this situation as an adult as well. Good question to ask your doctor of course but In my opinion it isn't a problem. I think coming out is a good thing. I would want these secretions to come out rather than stay in causing more constipation.

Hope your doctor is helpful

JenWren CFRD , 51 diag at 2
I just heard back from the cf doctor and he said it is unusual and probably from the decreased cftr function in her colon. Didn't really say if there was anything we could do about it.

Miralax will loosen the mucus and help to prevent the "gluey" build-up that is common and can be difficult to pass. Mucus in stool is normal with CF, but ask if Jasey's doctors are interested in maintenance Miralax to prevent future issues...

Thanks for the advice. Miralax doesn't work for her any more. She was on it since infancy and is now on ex-lax daily to have a bm. She had to have bowel resection surgery this past summer and they removed 28 inches of her colon but still requires a fairly large dose of laxatives to have a bm probably from all the mucus. Is there any medication that reduces the amount of mucus in the stool?

I think I have mentioned this before... When DS had his bowel obstruction two years ago, they tried golytely, miralax...and finally mucomyst. Mucomyst is old school -- U of MN still has some of their patients neb it to cut mucus, some take it orally for the NAC benefits. I know of a local family whose child was so incredibly pancreatic insufficient that his enzymes were at his maximum and they started giving him mucomyst orally to help cut the mucus in the digestive tract. I hear it DOES smell like roten eggs. I didn't really notice as they put it down DS' ng tube during his hospitalization.
