Tonsils Out

Stacia just got her tonsils out today and is really in so much pain. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get her to take her pain meds. I know she is ten years old and yes you can reason with her, but she says it burns so bad. If anybody knows anything to relieve the burning we would appreciate it. They are wanting her to take it like six times a day. She just cries and cries from it, a lot more then water or juice.

Oh no, I'm so sorry she is in such pain. I'm glad you got to come home like expected, but it stinks that she's miserable. I don't really have any suggestions on how to get her to take the meds. Can you mix it with anything to make it easier going down? Maybe the pharmacist has a suggestion. Can she use a topical spray, like chloroseptic, to numb the area before she swallows the meds?

(((HUGS))) to you both.

Oh my goodness, I had a flashback to when Anna had hers removed. She was 6. Like Stacia, she was miserable. What pain meds did they give her? Pills or liquid? I have sent a message to my husband (ENT,PA-C) asking his opinion. He may come on and sign in himself. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

OK, here's what my husband said...

Popsicles for the burning throat.

Assuming they gave her liquid pain meds. Which I believe is what they should have given her. Dilute the liquid pain med. with some tepid water. One for one, equal pain med. for equal tepid water. Tepid because extreme temps can hurt as well.

Make sure to give her pain meds on the clock, especiall the first 48hrs,even if you/she thinks she doesn't need it. If you wait and get behind the pain, it takes longer to get on top of the pain again. And she will be miserable, and so will you. So, yes, wake her up to give it to her!

My husband reminded me of that with Anna, how if we skipped the middle of the night dose cause she was sleeping so good, it didn't last long and she was worse off.

Hope this helps and that she is feeling better quick.
