Tonsils

Hi.

Well, DD's tonsils have been large for nearly 2 months. Not sure if she has always been this way, but ENT visit last month after 1 month of snoring unveiled the diagnosis.

So, if they don't go down I am wondering if he is going to suggest removal (maybe adenoids too).

I read somewhere that the tonsils and adenoids are the filter for the lungs. So, if we remove them, won't the lungs just be more exposed? Do kids "grow out of" or "grow into" enlarge tonsils/adenoids? Did anyone else deal with this at some point?

Thanks!

Edan.

I don't have personal experience with this but I do know that if you wait to have them out as an adult it's much worse/more painful then having them out as a kid. I have a cf friend who is post transplant but she had her tonsils out at age 27 and she said she was in bed for a week. My brother (no cf) also had his out as an adult and had a rough recovery.

A friend of mine's 4 year old wcf had tonsils, adenoids removed the same time she had sinus surgery. She couldn't breathe, so it affected her sleeping and eating. Said she had a completely different child who finally was interested in food, slept better, so was more alert, not as cranky.

From a personal note. I don't have cf, but had strep throat and tonsilitis quite a bit as a child. My tonsils became scarred and cryptic -- chronically infected and enlarged. Instead of filtering infection, they were making me sick. I had tonsil stones, pieces of debris from a very deep infection. At age 34 I had them removed and WISH I'd had it done years before.

Thanks for this. I wish there was more access to studies for CF and outcomes. Totally irks me. It seems I have numerous questions that would just be resolved with statistics. For example...if tonsils and adenoids are removed, does that correlate with earlier colonization of pseudomonas/staph, etc? OR, does that lack of removal do so?

1.) Don't they have some database somewhere that mines through all of this data?

2.) Do they disseminate it somewhere?

I agree, I'm very numbers orientated and it would be nice to have statistics sometimes. Unfortunately, there don't see to be many around.

The CFF does track quite a bit of information; though I don't know at what detail level.

However, this is not publicly available so it is worthless IMHO. They are very good at distributing generalizations and odd statistics, but I have never seen raw data to back up their press releases <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

We have not been diagnosed with CF. We are in the "waiting to see the genetics doc" step! UGHHH

Anyway.... both my kids who are now 12 & 13 had their tonsils and adnoids removed at a very young age. 21 months and my daughter at 14 months. They both had non-stop strep throat. It was very helpful and curbed their constant infections. However, both the tonsils and adnoids have grown back in both kids. The doctor failed to tell us that if they are removed before the age of 4 they can grow back. Not a reason to not do it but it is important that you are informed.
