Tooth Staining

How do your son's teeth conditions compare to yours and your spouse's? I'm convinced that some people are luckier than others. My son w/CF is 3 and takes adeks, zantac, enzymes, tobi, albuterol, pulmicort, and has reflux but has clean white teeth and got a good checkup. He brushes 2 or more times per day, but not all that well. His mother can skip tooth brushing and dentist visits for years and have clean cavity free teeth. I am a tooth brushing fanatic and have never missed a 6-month checkup in my life but still get plaque and cavities. I'm hoping my son got his mother's teeth.

Liza,

Two thoughts here... 1. Our dentist said that yes, definately meds can stain teeth.
2. By chance were you on any antibiotics at all during pregnancy? Some meds while pregnant can actually make a greyish stain on baby teeth.

Take care,

You probably are already doing this, but an rt who gave me some treatments before surgery a couple of months ago said that you should rinse your mouth out after every drug. Ideally, she said you'd use a mouthwash or something, but at minimum, you should rinse out with water between each drug and at the end. Not only will this help eliminate drugs staying on the surface of the teeth, but it will also help decrease the amount of the drug you absorb through your tongue (where its not doing anything but causing side effects really) and help prevent problems like thrush.

Again, this is probably old news to you, but just thought I'd mention it since it was new to me!

Could very well be the nebs. It's difficult for him to sit still and use the mouth piece because he's still little, so we use a mask with the tobi and pulmozyme.

DH and I both have really good teeth. So we're hoping DS will also. The staining is actually a brownish, yellow -- almost the color of adeks --- which is what scared me at first in thinking that it's decay.

Fortunately DH's dental insurance covers 4 cleanings a year and DS doesn't seem to mind going. Just HATES brushing his teeth. So we just have to work with him on that aspect. Our dentist gave him an egg timer to encourage him to brush for 2 minutes at a time. So far it's working a LITTLE bit. Toddlers!
