Has anyone ever used their port for TPN instead of antibiotics?

Just wondering if it caused any issues that might be different then a picc line.

The main reason I first got my port was for TPN. TPN = total perenteral nutrition. It's a big sack of calories and nutrients that you infuse over a long period of time (usually several hours a day for a few weeks or more.) It's for people who cannot gain weight effectively even when using nutritional supplements. I put on a good solid 30 pounds when I was on it and managed to keep it on for about 5 years.

I asked my doctor the same thing, why not use it for tpn. the doctor responded with a the fast "no way" I ever hear. The reason is tpn can be very damaging to the veins, especially if taken for long periods. It would also most likely cause damage to the medport tubing. My doctor said they really dont even like giving tpn unless absolutly necessary.
