I am currently considering going out of state for a transplant ( I live in AZ). How did you choose which center to be listed at?

My insurance pretty much told me where I could go. They gave me a list of places they would pay for...all of them at least 6 hours from my house. There was only one in NY (where I live) they would pay for and the rest were out of state. My CF doc didn't want me going to NYC (for whatever reason) so he called Cleveland Clinic in OH to see if they would take my case, since I needed lungs and liver. They weren't sure they would, but wanted to see me anyway.

In the end, I did get my double lung and liver transplant at Cleveland Clinic and I absolutely love that place...just don't like how far away it is.

I asked people who had gotten tx where they had gotten them and how they liked the drs and nurses and how their bed side manners were.

Then I looked at UNOS's website and looked at the stats and waiting lists. I had the option of pretty much going anywhere and I chose Stanford because the Drs were personable and great and they and the nurses had good bedside manner.

Now I am waiting for another tx and I am double listed at Stanford and The Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic's drs are amazing too, and everyone there from the cleaning ladies to the nurses to the greaters and all very helpful...only drawback is there is not much in Cleveland.

You can PM me if you have any more questions about either place.

I agree with Anna, there isn't much in Cleveland. But, if you have a GPS, you can learn your way around and go out to Brooklyn/Parma where there is more stuff to do or go to Legacy Village. I've been going to Cleveland since 2005 and my husband went to trade school there, so we have found stuff to do. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks Patti and Anna for your responses. I too, can pretty much choose anywhere. I am just starting this process so I still kind of swimming in the reality of even considering a transplant. I do feel strongly that I would like a great team that I can click with-I know that that will be an important relationship.

i chose my center b/c i'm lucky enough to live in a city with a world-renowned lung tx program, which also happens to be at the same hospital as my CF team. i really wanted continuity of care b/c i knew i would feel somewhat scared and "lost" anyway after tx, and i just liked the idea of sticking with the same group of people. by the time i had my tx i had a great relationship with the tx team b/c they would always coome by during my CF admits, i kept the same ID doc and ENT, and my CF doc was in aand out of the ICU and my hospital room post-tx. it just helped me trust everything that i was so connected to the doctors.

that said, i looked out of state, specifically at duke (b/c of the waiting list system there, as well as good stories) and cleveland (largely b/c of patti...lol). i feel like i made 100% the right choice for me, but i do encourage you to really look around. like anna i relied on UNOS, stats, and also personal stories from other tx patients.

Thanks to each of you. I so appreciate your willingness to share your experience. It is so valuable to me as I start this process.
