Traveling by airplane with the vest

We flew with it back in April and took it as a carry-on. We had no problem, they just took it to a special machine for closer inspection---but we had it back very quickly.

We used a luggage cart to get it around the airport, but carried it on to the plane. The steward told us to put it in the first available overhead. (It fit perfectly in the 747 overhead.) This is a great idea because it is very difficult to manuveur it down the isle.

We had asked about pre-boarding, but they said we need a special notation on our boarding pass. Maybe you can look into getting approved for pre boarding before the flight so you don't feel rushed.

Good Luck!

I did what everyone is NOT recommending: I checked my vest. I put it in a rolling duffel, surrounded it with padding (jackets, etc.) and told the people it was medical equipment. They slapped a bunch of bright orange 'FRAGILE' stickers on it and it arrived at my destination unharmed. I flew Southwest, btw.

I contemplated carrying it on, but traveling all by myself, carrying on portable oxygen, my neb compressor, etc. AND trying to lug that stupid vest onboard - I just didn't think I could manage it on my own. Even with pre-boarding, nobody helped me lift my neb compressor or other carryon into the overhead compartment. If I had the vest with me, too, I don't know what I would have done.

I would never check my vest, nebulizer or medicine, for fear of them getting lost, especially if I have connections and not a direct flight. I've never lost a bag, but you can never be too safe.

I travelled on Frontier Airlines three weeks ago. We had a layover and they kept saying, "this is a full flight, one carry on per person." But no one said a word to me as I wheeled my THREE bags (two of them are the vest and nebs, one was medicine) and a diaper bag, lap top and purse. (I was traveling with my family, including my 3 year old twins)

So take it on the plane with you. Ask for help loading it into the upper storage bins. If I didn't have my husband with me, I would have asked for help too.
