Trouble coughing stuff up

Lately I feel like I have gunk in my chest and it's really hard to cough and get it cleared out. What works for you when stuff gets stuck?

(Background info: I do vest, Pulmozyme, and sodium chloride. I'm currently on two weeks of Tobi and Cipro).

I find huff coughing helps a ton to get stuff up. I'm currently coming off a cold and have had some trouble moving the gunk around in my chest... BUT, when I take the time during my vest (or just sitting around) to huff, I get tons of stuff up.

I thought someone had once posted a link on huffing, but I don't know where it is... I think there is something that shows how to do a huff cough.

Good luck. I know its really frustrating to have it just rumbling around in your chest! Get out already!!! <img src="i/expressions/coughing.gif" border="0">

I dont know if this would be helpful or not but i'll throw it out there anyway.
Usually when i walk on the treadmill i always cough stuff out without even trying.
I guess the deep breathing moves things along. Do you have a flutter or Acapella?
You could try that also. I like to do the flutter and then right after ,use my peak-flow meter,It usually never fails to being up the crap.

I'm assuming you also use a bronchodilator at the beginning of your treatments. Tobi can be irritating and swells airways, so if you try to cough up stuff after Tobi it's going to be hard. Maybe check with your doctor to see if you are doing your meds in the best order when it comes to coughing up stuff.

What I do if it's hard to get stuff up...

After hypertonic saline, I use the Flutter -- I'll keep doing it until it works.

But if still congested, I do postural drainage (lying over sofa arm onto the seat)

If I'm sick and need further clearance, I take a hot steamy shower (shower must have chlorine filter on it) or lean over a pot of boiling water with a towel over my head (making a tent) and breathe in the mist. The doctor said I could put some natural eucalyptus in it as long as it's not irritating to me.

Drink hot tea with honey. Especially fresh ginger tea.

And once in a blue moon, when my lungs are really inflamed and congested, I've been given a cortisone shot, to open up the airways. And boy, does that do it.

And as Diane said, exercise does it for me too (but not if I'm sick).
