I have notice that i can't sleep more than two hours without waking up. At 2 hours, almost like clockwork, i wake up couching violently this lasts about an hour, then i fall back asleep to do it again in 2 hours. The times that i sleep longer, my chest feels worse. I feel like i need to clear myself out ever two hours in order to feel good. Anyone relate?

Ben, I totally feel your pain. I'm going through something
similar myself right now. Could the tightness in your chest
be from allergies? I'm having a horrible time with mine right
now. The only thing I can suggest is what I intend on doing
tonight...popping a Benadryl to a) treat the symptoms and b) knock
me out.
Also, you might want to give your doc a call and give him/her a
heads up. If you're that congested, you might have something
stirring up in your lungs and could use an antibiotic.
There's certainly no point in suffering, especially when
solid rest is so important.

I dont have it now, but I did in the past. Its an awful time because you need your rest tremendously (or at least I do) yet you cant get it. Mine was more connected to allergies then infection. For me they are very different coughs. I can sleep thru my normal CF cough, but that tickle in the throat, cough til you puke, Allergy cough is the worst!

Throughout my cf lung days, I always did a therapy session before bedtime and that usually cleared me up for over night. I would not take the albuterol treatment late at night just cpt. Then if I was really bad and did not feel like doing therapy, I would sleep on two pillows tilted and in the middle of the night when it was time for pee, I would cough and cough it all out and then easily go back to bed after a snack. That was my routine up until my first transplant.

Just to add my 2 cents here.
I used to do the very same thing if one of two things happened:
a) I would eat or drink dairy products right before going to bed
b) If I would do a TOBI treatment just before going to bed

If you're doing either of these things, it may be worth it to do them an hour or so before you go to sleep and see if that makes a difference. If not, like someone else said, mention this to your doctor & see what he/she thinks.
I hope you can figure it out. There's nothing like knowing you need the sleep & getting frustrated because you can't

Hi Ben,

I had a similar happen to me about 2 months ago and the docts felt it was more due to a sinus infection. Your sinuses can drip down to your chest or throat and cause tons of irrtiation and break up your sleep pattern. My docs treat sinus infections the same as chest infections, so that was the start of why I went into the hospital for a tune up. It worked for me....soon things cleared up and I have been able to sleep through the night ever since.

Do you have sinus trouble?

I feel that I could get to that stage again failry easily though so I try to do my night treatment within a few hours of going to bed. That way I'm as clear as possible before bedtime.

Hope this helps.

Sinuses are so tricky. My last cold that is almost over now came from my sinuses and thankfully I was able to sleep but it can be annoying if there is a drip. I remember years ago having a sinus cold and I slept in a reclining chair but kept it at a good angle and the drip did not bother me and i slept.

Dust mites live in your pillows and matress.

Get encassings for your pillow and matress. Get a HEPA air filter for your bedroom and shut the door at night.

And wash your sheets in HOT WATER every 7 days.

This will reduce your post nasal drip and allergies dramatically.

www.allergyasthmatech.com has great encasings.
