Trouble with The Vest-- Help!

Our daughter went through a time period with the same issues. First we went to the doctor who sent that it can cause an irritation outside, as well as inside. OK....lasted for a little while.

Then we made a Vest vest. We took thin fabric of Winnie the Pooh (her favorite), and using velcro, grommets for the air ports, and making holes for the tubes and straps, elastic...covered the flak vest, which took away that appearance for her. Then she watches Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and such jiggle when using the Vest. Put lace on the bottom to "fruffie" it up girlie style, and have not heard a complaint since. This does not attach to the vest, but goes around it. It allows for the expansion, and is removable for cleaning, as we all know there can be issues with spitting of mucous, coughin, or HTS and such. There has been no difference in the ability to vibrate her chest. Showed it to the doc, (pulmonologist)...who thought it was cute beyond all belief, and had no concerns.

Have not heard a complaint since.

Thank you for all of the advice. Eric does have sensory issues... like the tags in clothes. He loves sweatpants only and all of his clothes have to be large on him. I never thought that it being tight lik that would be the issue. I will bring it to our next visit and see what happens. Maybe they can get a larger one for him.
Thanks again!

When our daughter first got the vest, I mentioned to her that it might be fun if her friends tried it.

They loved it and made it a novelty and I think she adapted to it alot more quickly.

That might be something to try so that he might look at the vest in a new light, in addition to the other good suggestions about extra clothing and fabric.

Brandon has mild sensory issues mostly texture and I have to have him in plain cotton shits for his vest and that helps a lot also decreasing the pressure and as time goes on you can gradually increase it till its where it needs to be.. also B has to have his silky blanket to feel or he is angry so maybe having a pleasurable sensory item for him to play with to even out the dislike of the vest. I know he is older so maybe get a ds or game system for him to use only while on the vest and that should take his mind off the discomfort since he will be stimulated with the video games. oh also which I know the dr. does not like but it seems that the mask in conjunction with the vest is too stimulating for him so try not to neb while on the vest or use the mouth piece if he will do so for the meds you use on the vest.
