When you feel sick your body could care less about eating ...so as a cf patient it takes at least 3500 calories to maintain your weight... i need about 4000 and 4500 to gain....so recently i started a medication called megace....it increase your appitite 20x...or you can use marinol.... i added 12 lbs in two weeks....i eat all day nonstop...its awesome...example: bacon and eggs for breakfast....arbys roast beef at 11, boston market meal at 1230 another arbys beef and cheddar at 130 and a huge dinner and then snacks til bed, then my feedings...... it ends up being like 5,000 calories.....bad part, you better have cash for all the groceries

Like AimeeSue said, and what sexxiej tried to say, when people get sick or when lung function is low, the metabolism slows and blood flow (oxygen movement) is redirected (or "prioritized") to the most vital organs to ensure that they continue to function properly. The process of digestion uses a LOT of the bodies resources (oxygen, water, blood). Therefore, digestion can be particularly taxing to those of us with pulmonary problems. The body has to make the best use of the oxygen that it's able to get, so if you are getting sick and struggling to get oxygen to even your most vital organs, your body will down regulate (or slow down) other bodily functions that aren't as urgent. The process of chronic loss of appetite and weight attributed to these factors is called "wasting syndrome." People who are stuck in this process will need to be hospitalized, put on oxygen and given high doses of fats and essential amino acids to restore proper functioning of the body.

Hey Proxy,

About 3 years ago I had horrible lung infections one after the next, a crazy increase in thirst, and I barely was eating. I'm 5'6" and I went down to about 120 lbs from 145 in a month! I wound up in the hospital and as it turned out I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Your sugars could be a partial culprit in your recent decreased intrest in eating as well as losing weight. I would ask your doctor about having a urine analysis or a blood glucose test to make sure that you are not for sure diabetic. Once I got put on insulin and we began to get ahold of my sugars my weight began to rise steadily.

If that is not the case, I would suggest trying something as simple as drinking like a can or 2 of Ensure. It helps me keep on some weight especially while I'm sick. Sometimes insurance companies cover the cost of Ensure because after a while the price can add up if you buy it straight from the store shelves. Hope some of this helps! Let me know how things turn out for you

Your body is trying to kill off the bacteria, hence the raised body temperature and no appetite, it doesnt want to give the bacteria more nutrients to survive.

and megace really will make you want to eat anything. I ate things I normally hate but everything looks and sounds so yummy. And downfall is, you need about $200 dollars a week for groceries ahaha.

I've been dealing with a change in appetite since I was on IVs two months ago. Many days, I have to force myself to eat. The times/days I do feel like eating, I try to eat as much as possible. I have lost some weight, but thankfully, my activities are less so I am burning less calories.

I often have no desire to eat. I sometimes have nausea (this is complicated by my pancreatitis) and have vomited after eating. Sometimes, I want to eat, but nothing seems appetizing. I have a "magic number" that if I drop under that weight, I will work with the doctor. I have started drinking shakes more for nutrition than calories, but that might not work for long.

Good luck.

It turned out I did have blood sugar issues (having a hard time saying diabetes still)but they were on the low side, getting that under control and my lungs improving my appetite is slowly returning <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
