Two CF mothers from Bulgaria - Aneta Feodorova and Svetlana Atanasova - have been nominated for the Human of the Year Award, an annual award recognizing contribution to human rights in Bulgaria.
These two brave women, co-founders of the parent-patient Bulgarian CF Association, have been working hard to improve the standard of CF care in Bulgaria, where CF patients die on the average before the age of 13. Unrelenting and tenacious, the two mothers advocated passionately for CF patients and represented their rights before national and international organizations and institutions, such as the National Health Insurance Fund, the Ministry of Healthcare, the Child Protection Agency, the Commission on Discrimination, the European Parliament, and the World Health Organization. Through active presence in the national media, they raised awareness of the disease and the problems faced by Bulgarian CF patients. As a result of their incredible efforts, the inhaled TOBI 300 antibiotic was made available free of charge to Bulgarian CF patients; numerous donations of durable medical equipment, supplies, and medications were made; and the First Educational Seminar for Cystic Fibrosis was held in Bulgaria in 2010.
The winner of the Human of the Year Award will be determined by a public vote until December 6, 2010. Only one vote per e-mail address is permitted.
