Yes...we actually switched from UCD to Sutter a couple of years ago. The care at Sutter is more proactive...we liked Dr. Jhawar, but didn't feel that DD was receiving proper guidance from the whole team (i.e., dietician, respiratory therapist). The clinic appointments were disjointed and very long. Dr. Jhawar was never rushed and always answered our questions - once in the room - but our appointments were exceedingly long - most of it waiting in the exam room by ourselves.

DD's weight stayed between the 5th to 12th percentile in weight to length while at UCD whereas the CFF wants a minimum of 50%. They didn't push for a g-tube (or other approach) other than agreeing that she was in "nutritional failure" but at least she was staying on a growth curve (i.e., some growth was better than no growth). We had a consult with Sutter prior to switching and found out that UCD was underdosing her enzymes by 150%!!! Explain that?! Her weight has steadily improved since that time (though there has been a change from Pancrease to Zenpep - which helped a lot). Regardless, I didn't feel the care there was up to par and I think Sutter has proven me correct...

The CF team at Sutter is much more involved and structured....both centers are CFF accredited, but also keep in mind that UCD is a teaching hospital...something that I'm not a big fan of where my daughter is concerned. I prefer to deal with her actual doctor rather than a doctor in training prior to meeting with her doctor.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may have...

Wow, thank you for all that information. I wasn't sure if I would get a reply. I will have to check out Sutter before we make a decision. I have to drive all from Oregon so I want to make sure I get the best.

I do know a vet. teacher there who is also involved in pediatrics and pulmonary research. Do you know Kent Pinkerton at UC Davis?

You're welcome! I do not know Kent Pinkerton - sorry!

Have you looked into Stanford? They are more involved in the up and coming treatments for CF (they have more $$!)...but, I don't believe DD's care would differ much at this time between Sutter and Stanford. I've come to believe that we are our children's best advocate and physician at times - staying current with CF research and treatments on the parent's end is just as important as the center they attend....
