Well, despite us all getting the flu shot this year, my little one with CF tested positive for Type A flu yesterday. Wouldn't you know she came down with it the day after the ice storm hit North Texas!!! I made my hubby drive us to the doc to have her checked because I was afraid it was the flu...bummer. Anyways, overall, it seems to be a relatively mild case as she is up and playing and overall seems to feel pretty good despite a fever. Her nose is running like a faucet and she has an occasional dry cough. They prescribed Tamiflu of course and we have increased her treatments from her two normal ones. Are there things I should be looking for that could indicate possible complications such as pneumonia? We've never had to cross this bridge before and would love some input!
TIA

we get flu shot every year and inspite of that my dd w/cf (and me) gets the flu anyway but it is in mild form. From what i heard the flu short is only 50% effective.
The complications I usually look for is congestion, wet cough etc. Actually when mine had the flu it started like you described with dry cough but then turned into congestion, so she was put on antibiotics.

Thanks for the input...it is now day 5 and she is still running a fever but it is controlled with Motrin. Her cough is developing into a wet cough now so I'm sure antibiotics are next on the agenda...and of course it is the weekend.
I hope everyone is staying warm and WELL!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Mandy,

My daughter with CF had the flu last week. She had fever for about 3 days, headache cough which then turned wet and really bronchial. I listened to her lungs and she was wheezing throughout. She got worse last weekend, luckily I brought her in, her CF doc just happened to be covering and in the office on a Sunday! Her o2 sat was only 89-92% and her PFT's were down . He put her on 5 days of prednisone and 2 different oral antibitoics plus she was already on TOBI. The prednisone helped ALOT. She is still coughing a little but not like before. And she is not wheezy. We have a followup in a week. I guess if you have an on call CF doc you trust you might want to call?

We had all gotten our flu shot but I got the flu, my son and daughter got it...Somehow my husband did not get it. I am still coughing as well but feeling better.

Push fluids as much as you can on your child and I would bring her in to see her CF doc if you can't today and you feel her breathing is ok then tomorrow.
