Hi everyone,

I had an OB appointment today. They measured the baby and he's already 5 lbs...so he's measuring in the 81st percentile. He is the size of a 34-week-old fetus even though I'm only 32 weeks. Not sure how big he'll end up being! Anyone on here give birth to a large baby?

They also found the umbilical cord to be around the baby's neck twice. They now want to monitor me twice a week alternating between NSTs and BPPs. They say the cord is loose now, but they want to make sure it doesn't get any tighter and affect the baby. I know it's common to have a nuchal cord, but of course it's still worrisome.

My weight gain is only 5 lbs at this point, but they don't seem to be all that concerned. I am gaining about 1 lb/week at this point, so I'm hoping to reach a weight gain of 15 lbs by the end of my pregnancy.

I'm feeling great though and trying to prepare myself for a new baby in the house. It's getting exciting!

I didn't have a vaginal birth, so i can't comment on birthing a large baby. I had the perinatologists following me and they have great equipment, but even with that great equipment and ultrasounds every six weeks, including one at 36 weeks along, they were still wrong about the weights. It's only a best guess, as you can imagine. So my point is those ultrasounds are only as good as +/- 10%. So realistically your son is anywhere between 4#8oz and 5#8oz right now. They were off my 10% with my kids, my babies were smaller than guesstimated.

Good luck with the NSTs and BPPs.

I agree w/ Tara that ultrasounds can be wrong - and they often are. The figure I've been told is +/- 2 lbs! I honestly wouldn't put a lot of stock in his size right now. And unfortunately, size is often a tool used against women - doctors tell them that their baby will grow too big to birth and then they are induced early (even though the ACOG says that suspected big baby is not a reason to induce - so they are going against their own medical organization). Anyway, I think you'll be fine even if he is 8 or 9 lbs. Women give birth to big babies all the time. Remember - fat squishes!

As for the nuchal cord, it is common. So don't stress about that either. Before routine late term ultrasounds women and their doctors never knew about it till birth.

Glad you're gaining now. At my appointment almost 2 weeks ago I was up 11 lbs. We'll see where I'm at on Thursday. I'm pretty sure I'm following the same pattern that I had w/ my son.
