uncomfortable with decision

Hi,

I can't add anything to cultures as I am new to it myself, however, I can tell you how the meds affect my daughter if that helps...

HTS - by far the #1 treatment when she has a cold. I have been able to experiment A LOT this year as she started preschool and had one cold after another. HTS brings more up than xopanex, albuterol or pulmozyme for her. Hands down this is my drug/non drug of choice. I may have some of the details wrong, but you can find a study somewhere where they had babies with bronchitis/pneumonia neb 3% saline in the hospital and on average they got out earlier than those who did not. These were babies without CF.

xopanex - gives my daughter a hoarsy cough if I use it too often.

albuterol - makes her heart "beep" (her words) if we use it 2+ times per day for a few days in a row.

pulmozyme - ?can you get this one? gave her a runny nose/scratchy voice for the first week, then back to normal.

Good luck. I feel for you in your search for the right answers.

Just a quick FYI on the hypertonic saline. If he already has a scratchy throat, it might aggrivate it. Both my girls complained of scratchy throats and couldn't tolerate it long enough to get through an entire cycle. They used 7% hypersal. That's not to say your son will have the same reaction. I agree, it is worth a try. At worst, it doesn't work and it's money down the drain but to me, it's every bit worth trying. 6 wks on and oral with little to no improvement says something else needs to be tried. Does he do pfts at all? I don't know the story of what's going on but read he doesn't have a CF diagnosis so I don't know if they are doing pft's or if you see a CF doc.
I hope your husband gets a satisfying answer back from the doc.

Hi - we intoduced hypertonic saline step by step. first we did just 0,9% and then increased it to 3% then 5% - that till know. We where told to this this way as to get Asia used to the saline and it never seemed to aggrivate her throat.
I hope your husband gets sme satisfying answeres too.

I may have some of the details wrong, but you can find a study somewhere where they had babies with bronchitis/pneumonia neb 3% saline in the hospital and on average they got out earlier than those who did not. These were babies without CF.

would you have a reference for that study by any chance?

To answer the question about Pulmozyme causing a runny nose... The first time DS' nose ever ran was when he was 2 1/2 and was started on pulmozyme.

I sat back in amazement because prior to this -- since day one, DS' nose was always stuffed up with really THICK sticky mucus and the only way to get it unstuffed was to attack him with saline drops and the dreaded bulb syringe (until he was 4 and tried sinus rinses).

So IMO, it could be cutting up the mucus in the nose/sinuses, similar to what it's supposed to do in the lungs. As for hoarseness, I've noticed it more a day or two after starting tobi and then it's gone.

All I would add is that your thread title says 'uncomfortable' with the decision, and if thats what you are you have every right to call an irritate your doctors until you are comfortable. Remember you are paying them. Moms have great instincts. From the tone of your posts, I think you know already that he needs a change of regimen-you just need someone to tell you its ok to speak up.
Hyp sal is an awesome tool-its helped me more than anything, but I echo what others have said, it may make him more irritated at first. I had to dilute it to 3% until I was comfortable. And involving big bad dad is a great idea! Just don't be afraid to speak up-doctors really do mean well but its you, the mom, thats up at night tossing and turning, not the doctor.
