Once born we fell into some bad luck and had some unexpected complications. Due to these issues we know she has some lung damage, probably permanent. We do not have any PFT information because she was unable to tolerate them and is now to young to complete them properly. She has been hospitalized a few times for infections and pneumoniabut not since 9/2010, which was a good thing because we had no major issues during the cold season. Ava also seems to have an asthma component with wheezing and is on Advair. We recently had a culture and she grew MSSA. She has had a decline in stamina and has had more trouble catching her breath lately and working (pulling)to breath even with relativel small amounts of activity. We are on our second round of steriods. My question is how can her lungs sound clear with no wheezing but she is having trouble catching her breath? I was thinking of pushing for a tune up so she would be strong for pre-school but not sure, any suggestions. For what it is worth there has been many times where the doc use to tell me I do not sound really bad lung wise but yet I was coughing my head off and ready for a tune up. So maybe she could use a tune up? I really do not have any good answers but do hope you can find some relief for her! Stay strong.
know when DS was wheezing as a baby, his doctor told us to increase his CPT to "beat it out of him". We did 4 times a day when he developed a cough or upper respiratory infection. DS has been on albuterol/atrovent nebs since he was a baby, not for asthma, but to open up the airways.

DS is 8 and hasn't mastered pfts yet. He has had lung scans which show his lungs are clear. I do know some people who go to U of MN who've indicated they have infant PFTs. Also, DS has never had a bronch, but maybe that's something to consider.

As a parent you KNOW when something isn't quite right with your child. I was once told DS' lungs were clear and that his cough, which sounded chesty was normal "it's what they do (cfers), the cough" is what the doctor said. Well DS was only 2 months old. Turned out he had bronchitis. His doctor in the city yelled at us as didn't we KNOW he could've ended up in the hospital! His baseline for DS is NO cough. Another thing to consider is her sinuses. DS has some sinus issues which cause him to have a post nasal drip sorta cough in the winters. We usually do sinus rinses and increase vesting when that happens.

You are right, I do feel something isn't quite right. She does have sinus issues and has had a sinus flush but no need for scrape. We did have a bronch last sept. and they said her airways were really clogged but nothing grew but normal flora and MSSA from culture. We have had CT's done and see where she does have some damage but not sure what it means b/c there is no pft to back it up. In, the meantime I guess we wait. I think I may push for tune up just so she is strong for the pre-k and cold season.

I have a bit of an asthma component as well and hypertonic saline made me 10x worse. I went from being able to run 4 miles non-stop to maybe 1/4 mile and I was gasping for breath. Speak with her doc about stopping the HTS and see if that makes a difference.

I agree with Havoc.

It may be worth ruling out a problem with the HTS. We are lucky that Andrew tolerates it, but I know of many who do not. The only problem Andrew has with it is periodic lung bleeding, but we just discontinue for a few days and he is good to go. But if you are noticing more shortness of breath it may be worth seeing how you do for a month without it.

As for how the lungs "sound"? Andrew always sounds good. Even when he has a good infection going and is coughing up a ton of stuff, he still 'sounds' good. And I know other cfers who say the same. So, I don't put alot of weight on what his lungs sound like.

Good luck!
