University of Utah CF clinic

Has anyone gone to the University of Utah CF clinic recently?
I use to go, but stopped before Dr. Bruce Marshall left.
He was a good doctor, but I had trouble with some of the hospital staff and decided to leave the clinic.
I recently received a letter to return for annual testing, which I'm intrested in doing, but would like to know the quality of the clinic first.

Thanks,
Faith 33w/CF

I have gone to U of U for about 2 years now and love it. I have had one hospitalization and also loved the staff and everyone there! What would you like to know? Feel free to PM me or continue this thread with your questions and I will try my best to answer. The docs there now are Dr. Carveth and Dr. Liou. I've seen Dr. Carveth way more often than Dr. Liou, although I also saw him when I did a research study for the U about a year ago and he was the invesigator. Did you ever see either of them? Not sure about pediatric docs, but I assume you mean adult clinic, right?

Sonia,
Thanks for the help! It is the adult clinic I was asking about. I always liked the hospital staff & went to the clinic since I was 12. It was mainly the actions of one person that caused me to leave about 8 years ago. Even tho I love the local pulmo doctor, he is not a CF expert. My respiratory health is declining very rapidly & I'm getting scared. I thought maybe the CF clinic would have a few new ideas, but I'm very leary of returning. I'm afraid they will want to take over all my health care.
How often are you "required" to attend?
How long does it take & what day is the clinic held?

Thanks again,
Faith w/CF 33

Faith...

They haven't hassled me too much about getting there every three months since I live 400 miles away, but I think they'd LIKE me to come every 3-4 months as per CFF guidelines. BUT, that being said, I've asked them how many patients they see and they say there are X# (can't remember) "active' that come regularily to clinic and X# "inactive" that only come to clinic when they need something or are really sick. So, I know they will see people who don't come regularily, though I'm sure its not ideal for them (or the CFer). I think they ranked kinda mediocre when looking at the ratings as far as how many people come to quarterly appts, but not sure. You could check out the CFF clinic info to see how they "rank" on this.

They hold clinics on Monday and Wednesday. The latest appt. I can get is 11 am on either of these days.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or PM me.

May I ask, is the person you left because of several years ago still with the clinic? Just curiousity....

I will make an appointment Monday. The person I had problems with was part of the hospital staff, not the CF clinic. I do not know if this person is still there. That is one reason I am so nervous to return. This person not only caused me physical & emotional pain, but also almost caused me financial harm. I never "reported" her and hope she has cause no one else harm.

The longest the CF clinic would allow me between visits was 2 months. I only live about 1 hour away, but between asking someone to drive me & the SLC pollution it was to often.
It seems like the sicker I feel the harder I try to pretend nothing is really wrong. But in the last few monthes my FEV1 has dropped from 44% to 27%, inspite of 7 weeks of home IV antibiotics in Dec. I've also lost 25lbs & can hardly get off the bed anymore. I'm a little embarrased about how sick I've let myself get.

Oh, Faith... I wish you well and hope you get feeling better soon. Yes, there is actually one person on the hospital staff that I felt very unsteady about.... I wonder if we're talking about the same person? You can PM me if you want more info. and maybe I can answer if this person is still on the staff there as I was just admitted in November.

Anyway, I hope you feel well soon. And, I know what you mean about getting to clinic... I dread that drive and temperature change and POLLUTION... last time was terrible there... maybe that was why my FEV1 dropped 9% from the last time I was there in Nov!!

Anyway, good luck. Let me know if you have other questions.
