I am about to start an I.V. course tonight It's with my usual "drug of choice" -imipenem. It always makes me extremely nauseous. A volunteer at my hospital said that he thinks a lot of cfers have the same reaction and now I am curious.

i am on it right now.....just finishing a course of 3 weeks and have had NO problems....I have been on it before. Actually, this has been an easy course of IV's for me. I haven't even had any yeast problems except here in the last few days. Kind of odd for me.

I hope it goes well for you. I don't know if this will help; but, i did make a discovery this time around that helped me tremendously. I WAS having headaches and nausea for the first day or say along with a strange occular problem. For some reason I put two and two together. I realized that the IV push of saline and heparin in between and at the end was sending a lot of antibiotic from the line into my system VERY quickly....especially with an extension line on the PICC. So I take about 5 to 8 minutes to do the flushes and heparin....allow for a slower time to clean out the line and that cured me of all my problems. That sudden rush of abx that goes in when I flush the line is really a bit much to put in that fast.

UGH- nausea is the story of my life.

I have to get pre-dosed with zofran before they run the imipenem. At night I get benadryl too. During the day if it's bad, they'll give me ativan.

I'm not allowed to do IVs at home anymore because the nausea is too bad for me to deal with on my own. Last winter they put me on tigecycline and that started the whole problem. I was violently ill the entire time I was on it (just a week, I couldn't handle to lose any more weight). Ever since that episode, if nausea is listed as a possible side effect to anything, you can bet I'll be puking if I take it!

I had to cut back on my oral antibiotics because even they were making me sick.

Imipenem is the worst offender though, 2nd after tigecycline. Meropenem is not quite as bad, but still makes me throw up. You're not alone! It sucks

i just finished imipenem last nigth and surprisingly had no problems with it at all. i had also been warned that it might be tough to tolerate, but nothing from my end. i was also on tobra and aztreonam for my PA, and the imi was for the achromobacter madness.

i hope it goes smoothly for you - or at least that you start feeling better soon. i hate the ivs too!
