UPDATE* confused

Hi all,

I started with exacerbation-like symptoms last week, increased cough, extra sputum, crackly, and harder to breathe. I knew right away that I need some antibiotics, so I got started on Colistin.

Initially I thought I was feeling better, but now my symptoms are much worse. But oddly enough, I have lost a lot of the sputum production; however, I am extremely SOB and have a tight, dry cough. I have been using albuterol much more frequently and I'm kind of baffled.

I tried to look at the side effects of Colistin from the pharmacy, but they only show the side effects of using it as an injectable med, not inhaled. So I'm wondering if this is a side effect or not.

Any one else have problems with Colistin? Or know if this is a side effect?

UPDATE: I had my clinic appt today. PFT's were down 15% and my MD agreed that the Colisin was making things much worse for me with regards to the tightness, etc. He said that's a common side effect, even though that's never happened to me before. So plan B is to go on Minocycline for the steno and start Tobramycin back up for the PA. Hopefully that will do the trick! Thanks for the advice on the Colisin.

Hi Leah,

Colistin makes me tight and wheezy, but the symptoms don't last more than about 4 or 5 hours. Often I do another albuterol treatment after Colistin which helps alot. It's a common side effect.

Hi Leah

My son coughed A LOT when on coliston. Not sure about the tightness as he was quite young at the time and not able to articulate exactly what was going on.

His doctor said coughin is a recognised side effect.

hey there,

When I started colistin I had the same problem. Dry cough, my chest was tight and I couldn't catch my breath for the longest time after using it. I was using albuterol more than usual when I first started it.

To combat the problem, I mix the colistin like normal (w/2mL sterile water) and then put it in a neb WITH the albuterol. I think it works wonders that way. The abx feel like they do their job, and the albuterol at the same time opens my lungs up more. Plus, because it's mixed, I feel like there's a longer lasting effect of the nebulized albuterol. There probably isn't, lol, but mixing the two together just makes the neb longer, therefore making it seem like I'm puffing a 15 minute albuterol (rather than the normal 5-10...albuterol goes so quickly).

Hope you feel better soon.

My personal experience is that colistin tends to mask some of my exaccerbation signs. Before I started taking colistin, in addition to feeling lousy I would see a change in the color and/or amount of sputum I was producing.

However, when I'm on colistin I find that I don't see the sputum change necessarily. Rather I'll feel lousy and sometimes run a very low grade fever.

Over time I've learned that what feels like an exaccerbation needs to be treated as one, whether or not I see a change in sputum - especially if I'm taking colistin.

(I now take colistin every other month.)

Hope my observations are helpful to you even though they are far from scientifically grounded.

Thanks for the info on the side effects, sounds like that was the problem. I have decided to stop the Colistin. It was just making me feel much worse than before. I was taking a lot of albuterol and it still wasn't really helping. I am heading to clinic tomorrow, so hopefully we'll come up with a plan B.
