Its completely normal for this to happen, osteoperosis/osteopenia goes along with CF like many other things because we don't absorb all our calcium and Vit D. I was on Fosamax originally but had horrible side effects from it and was switched to Boniva which has been fine but I have trouble remembering to take it because it's only once a month. At my last pre-transplant appointment I met with the endocrinologist and he suggested switching to either the injectable Boniva which is 3 times a year I think or to Reclast which is a once a year iv infusion. The nice things about these is I'd have it done at regular follow up appointments so nothing for me to remember and because it goes directly into the bloodstream there is no problems with absorption.

Last year I had a DEXA scan and everything was normal, the exception being my hips. They showed osteopenia. My family doc told me to just take calcium supplements, and I took I bottle of Oscal, and that was it. I just thought the fact that I drink a plethora of milk would be sufficient enough, boy was I wrong! I couldn't get another DEXA scan because my insurance won't cover it again, so I figured it had progressed to full blown osteporosis. I am going to treat it as the worst case scenario, so no stones are going to remain unturned. For the past few months I have had debilitating pain, mostly coming from my hips, and I felt decades older than I actually am. For the past few weeks, I have taken Citracal, and it is a god-send! I immediately felt better after 1 dose of them, and now I am almost 100%! I wish I would've started taking Citracal when I was in my 20's, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Yeah, I was told at 18 that I had osteopenia and my hips and spine and osteoporosis in my hands. All the docs told me to do was take calcium and vitamin D every day. They said it's really no big deal, especially in light of everything else I have, so there was no point putting me on actual meds.
