Update on Alysa

I've had asthma since I was little. The only advice I'd give at the moment is to keep an eye on her in certain situations that could aggravate her asthma... for example, if she is going to be running around a lot, or if others in the family are getting allergies. You will eventually learn what triggers her asthma the most and that will make it a bit easier.

My 2 year old has CF and asthma. He uses an corticosteroid inhaler twice a day. Sometimes when he has a cough that doesn't respond well to antibiotics, the doctors add on prednisone and it always helps. Allergies can trigger asthma symptoms. My son's doctors are going to decrease the inhaler from 3 puffs to 2 puffs at the end of summer when the pollen dies down, and see how he does. His doctor says he has a large asthma component, although it doesn't cause much trouble.

Your daughter is fine now. And now they know she has asthma and can treat it. She's probably feeling better, and so are her lungs! There's a small possibility she'll outgrow it. Don't worry yourself silly. And of course knowing your second daughter has CF doesn't help with the stress, but don't let just knowing that Alysa has asthma keep you from thinking positively. I know it's scary, I myself cried when they first told me my son had asthma. Try not to stress out about it, just think of asthma as a part of her CF, something that a lot (if not most) people with CF suffer from to some degree. Yes, you will have to go through a lot of this stuff again with your second daughter, but you'll be one step ahead of the game! You've been there, done that! You'll know what to watch for and what to expect.

BTW, what are you going to name the new baby girl? Due in September right? So you're past the halfway point. Must be gettin pretty big!

Thank you so much! I was so scared to hear she had asthma also but I am a little comforted to hear that other people with CF also have it (sorry if that sounds cold or mean). I just want her to be as normal as possible. She seems to be doing much better now actually, even in the few days since she was diagnosed. Like I said when she was DX with CF.... it sucks, but we have a name and a treatment now and can work on making her better.

Our expected daughter's name is going to be (although I am sure it will change) Arianna Rachel Marie Robinson, go by Rachel, we all go by our middle names (Alysa's is Brooklynn Alysa Lee Robinson). I originally liked Sadie instead of Rachel but when we told a few people some said "Don't people name their dogs that?" or told us how someone they know has a dog named that so yeah that sort of killed the name for us so we arent telling anyone of our friends or family until AFTER she is here and named <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> And yes, I am getting pretty big and she is kicking like crazy. I swear she does exercises at 3:30am every morning lol.

If your daughter has asthma, take her to an allergist (not GP, IM, FP) to get skin tested for allergies.

I'm willing to be the farm that's what is causing her asthma. Allergies are often undiagnosed with CF because we have so many other similar symptoms that docs chalk up to CF.

When allergies are diagnosed, reference my blog for tips on how to effectively treat allergies. It has changed my lungs completely.

Until then, go out and buy two HEPA air filters. One for her bedroom and one for the room where she does meds. This will make a huge difference.
